On a road bike is fecking scary 49.1 mph this morning, and I've already decided that I won't be doing that again.

Pah. I've just fallen short of that on my mountain bike. That's when you really notice if your rear wheel isn't true.
I remember that I also managed 55mph on the same hill on a road bike in my teens, before my legs had properly developed.
Now get back on your bike and get some decent speed, paul. I won't be impressed until you crack 60mph. [;)]

It was when I was braking, and realised that nothing was really happening that really scared me

There's a good clip somewhere of a guy riding what looks like a normal bike along the flat at nearly 100mph by drafting a car.
In the meantime,

Ahhh! I thought he was being towed, but he seems to be using the car to cut through air! So you can go 100mph with a bike when the only friction is in the wheels and no air? [:)]
To clip or not to clip, that is the question. Whether tis nobler in the mind of men to suffer the dings and contusions of unclipp'd riding, or to bind thy feet against a sea of gnarly singletrack and by these contraptions, ride o'er them with ease. To clip... to slip no more, and by clipping to end the buttache and the thousand natural shocks that ryders are heir to; tis a consummation devoutly to be honed. No clip - to slip perchance to be thrashed most heinously...

I've done over 35mph downhill with a flat front tyre on a road bike (back in my youth!) as I had no spare tube.
Had to hang off the back of the bike big time just to maintain some control, braking was fun too, trying to only use the back & not lock the front up, proper brown trouser time!
