Hi there

just asing for a bit of advice. Afer having œ800 worth of bike nicked from my shed last night i wondered if anyone had any security "golden rules" tips or anything like that.

I know the painfully obvious answer is to keep it inside, but rents aren't too happy with that, there are three between us.

Having just bought a carrera fury as a replacement today, and am likely to spend about a further œ100 on accesorries i want to make sure it doesnt get stolen like the last two.

The sheds are secure(ish) but obviously disproved last night. Have toyed about with the idea of either buying/building some sort of metal/brickwork structure to hold them and a number of locks.....

any ideas?

Let the dog sleep in the shed.

I don't think there's much you can do. Perhaps concrete a metal hoop in the floor to chain the bikes to? A security light?

The anchors from Evans arn't exactly cheap are they!

You can get an anchor bolt from your local DIY store for much less.

Ok, perhaps they're nowhere near as secure. But I can see anyone without tools removing them in a hurry; and if they've got tools then they'll probably just cut the chain!

Sorry to hear your news. Speaking from experience I would also watch out for them coming back in about 6 - 8 weeks (usual payout time for insurance). To the annoyance of the wife I keep our bikes in the house although I even invested in 3 Magnum Gold secure locks but I still think the little sods would get them.

Unfortunatley wooden sheds are never going to be secure.

My bike lives with a Kryptonite New York shackle, a New York Fahgeddaboudit, a Magnum Plus lock (the gold secure one) and 3 Kryptoflexes. With various obstacles like 6ft fences, barbed wire and door locks in the way.

blimey, the sum of that stuff must come close to the total cost of my bike!

after numerous discusssions, we have kind of decided on the idea of building some kind of brickwork structure and a ring bolted to the patio with several locks....

  • Talk to your rents and find some way of keeping the bikes indoors, maybe in a cheap fabric bike bag or only if they are clean etc.

Do you have power in the shed? If so you can put an alarm in pretty cheap œ60 ish

If your in baby monitor hidden out of sight in the shed and the other end in the house works well - you can catch them at it!!

Shed alarms tend to work off from a door sensor. Switched on little thieving scrots tend to kick / cut in the bottom quarter of the door (no sensor), climb in and then disable the alarm from the inside.

We also need to remember how many house alarms go off and nobody acts, the alarm bell on shed alarms are also very poor quality and in most cases can't be heard outside of the shed.

I'm considering getting one of these as well http://www.home-security-action.co.uk/d ... larms.html , however it wouldn't of helped last time I was robbed at about 11.00 a.m and I was at work

    no power

to be honest, my bike probably isnt worth nearly half as usch as of one of most peoples bikes on here, so maybe just some kind of anchor may be a good idea...

This is a very interesting thread to me right now, i have just bought an Orange P7 Pro and it will likely be kept in my shed. Wont be able to do the ground anchor thing but i was wondering if any of you have any experience of decent bike locks. Would be buying a couple i guess and i would prefer the flexible wire/chain types but i dont know if these are any good/too pricey and if D locks are better.

In the mean time i am trying to work out if i can keep it in the house (without a beating from the missus too!)

What you need is VERY LOW voltage supply with a HIGH aperage [sp] running through whatever you lock your bike to. When you are electrocuted it is the amperage that kills, the voltage lets you know you are being electrocuted. If the voltage is low enough the person attempting to steal your bike won't actually know that their heart is being fried by the amps running through them[}:)]!

i like mcobie's ideas, but at the risk od stating the obvious if you want to hang on to your bike use two good locks to attach your bike to a imooveable object. i use a motor bike lock that is hardened steel surrounded by nylon to clog cutters and a D lock so it means the buggers have to bring twice as many tools.

In your shed if you don't have an imoveable object make up some cement, poor it in a bin bag put a tube though it and you have a 30kg rock to tie it to, use a dust bin then 60 kg just don't lock it to the plastic handles.

good luck feller, glad to hear you are buying another bike.

you could always buy a couple of geese and put them in the shed nobody ever get past them.

In addition to what others have said, you might consider a dummy alarm box for the shed, battery powered with a flashing red light, it might be enough to make a non-determined burglar move on to the the next shed.

You can also get battery powered ultrasonic alarms (triggered by movement), although it'd be inside the shed, these can be very loud and would certainly not encourage the burglar to hang around.

Finally, I'd suggest you dont have the bike on show too much during the day. ie try not to clean it etc where anyone passing by can get a good look at it.
