Commencal or no Commencal

With exams coming up (im 18 and doing A levels) I want something to take my mind off of them. I currently regularly ride in the lake district (south nr coniston). i currently ride a 2005 Specialized epic (which im not the biggest fan off, but iv built it up good and light). Now, iv fallen in love with Commencal Meta 5's, after riding a friends now walna scarr, it felt so composed and just great. Now im going to Uni next year, up north still hopefully (all the best riding), but really really want a Meta 5.2 or 5.1, but im not sure if ill be able to afford it. Iv have plenty of money, but dont want to spend it all due to up and coming education, so would willingly buy one second hand or in last years or the year before sale (any way of getting plenty of money off).
Im 6 foot 4 and a half, so would i need a large or extra large, (charts suggest extra large), and would it be suitable for rough lake district and Scotland (planning my summer round there) down hills and trial riding along with some free ride and technical XC.
please help. i look on Ebay everyday in hope of the XL commencal 5, oh yeah, and it must have fox forks (love them). cheers guys...

Charts are only a rough guide, I'd still test them. You may be better off with just an L.

And remember listen to the voices:
Good voice: uni will cost more than you expect, flog your current bike and see if you can afford on then.
Bad voice: BUY A BIKE, you've got a student free overdraft for something
Good voice: You're so gonna get shafted by the bank...

Always remember to pick your Uni according to the local trails or you'll be stuck with nowhere to ride for three years!0 -
My student overdraft bought me my Zaskar! That should be good advice to anyone: don't do it.

yeah i could sell my current bike, but would probably only get around œ700+ for it. do you know of any where that sells them cheap. And of those whom already own at meta 5, what size do you suggest? but iv got enough to buy one, but unsure whether to or not, and which meta numero.0

They are well sopught after bikes, you will have a hard job tracking one down on the cheap I think.

theres no large or XL test bikes in the North East, so you may also struggle down where you are

Right, I'll keep it simple: BUY ONE!!!
I read an article in MBR last autumn where they test rode several 5 inch travel bikes...the Commencal Meta 5.2 won hands down...scored 10/10.
Ever since, I've wanted one, but with a house move and a newly purchased Giant XTC XS, I couldn't justify it. Then one day about 2 months ago, I was flying down the side of Moel Famau in North Wales, when my retinas nearly fell out. It was at this point that I realised I'd out grown hard-tails amd "needed" a full floater.
I decided to track down a Meta 5.2, but discovered that they are re-badged as 5.5.2's as of 2007 (the .5 stands for 5 inch travel....the fox fork on the 2007 model has 5.5 inches...you can work the rest out!). I eventually found one at Keswick MB. The owner of the shop also has a Meta (5.1- higher spec), which according to the lads in the shop, he loves a "little too much!." Anyway I rang up, he (the owner- Amos) answered and I told him I was intereted in a Commencal Meta.....there was a pause and then he responsed with a heart-felt "Nice!"
3 days later I took delivery and have never looked back. I can honestly say that there isn't a single thing I'd change about the bike.....put simply, its flawless and has turned my MB'ing into an almost spiritual experience!
As for the size....blimely, you're a big lad for your mum!! at 6'4, you will need at XL. I'm 6'1 and have the large.
Hope you manage to track one down.

The thing is just because you are one size doesn't mean someone else of the same height needs the same, or a taller person a bigger frame. Very much depends on inside leg measurements and your reach. The XL may be too long. I am 6ft, 34 inside leg and ride 17 and 18 inch GT frames. Testing is essential.

Can't argue with Sonic....you must test ride, but as a guide, Amos form KMB is 6'4 and has gone for a laid back seat post and longer stem on an XL!!0

Lol, you are probably right, but cant hurt to check, tis a lot of money!

I know what you park pre, my ride on the commencal over walna scarr was the best time iv had over that hill, and iv done it fair few times. I rode a mates 2006 5.2 and the sizing felt ok, but my current ride is a size large and does feel small, i want something that feels sturdy and cosy.
I really want one, and with a very long summer before uni im planning touring and riding for most of it. so do want a new bike to use.
Iv found one at 2499 euros but 2006 5.1, but its large, doesnt looks as nice as the 2007 range either, im unsure, may wait a while and get a new one.
Whilst on the topic, anyone want to buy at 2004/5 (ill have to check) specialized epic pro, with fox forks, XT groupset, V8 pedals, Easton monkeylite bars (may take off), race face evolve stem, thompson elite stem, braided XT disc brakes etc. in pretty good condition, only a few scratches, no real damage. what sort of money should i be looking for? would part exchange for a commencal of course....0 -

I'm just under 5.11" and sit on a large frame. I could sit on either but for me it was a little cramped on the medium. Buy a frame if you already have the bike.œ850 for a frame with RP23 is a bargain if you can find one that is. They are like rocking horse ****e.If not buy the 5.5.3 bike and upgrade later on parts. If not buy the Meta 5.5.1 and ride straight outta the box and explain to the bank manager later [:D]..........By the way it is a great ride.
