How to avoid a fight - More of a Scottish thing
I was out for a "wee tipple" tonight in my lovely local boozer ( bit of a dump) two guys came in to the lounge shouting about "Who are the Rangers fans" I laughed to my mate which was jumped on by the two pricks who were shouting. When they came over and started giving me grief I explained I was a Rangers fan who wasnt into the bigotry crap and to piss off ( Most of my close friends are NOT rangers fans and quite a few are Celtic fans). They then started ranting on about what a bigot I was and how I was retarded for supporting "Orange Scum"... I again explained i was not a bigot and that I was from Glasgow unlike these two tossers and they got rather annoyed..one of them swung for me and this is my question
Quite often you read in the papers about people who have been in a fight and get charged with assault....how the bloody hell are you meant to avoid it in situations like this????????
As it turns out the two guys got a kicking as my best mate (who I was out with) is an ex judo UK champion, which helped things from my side a bit

Unlucky dave.
I'm just glad you managed to come out of it OK. It's situations like those that you can't really do anything to avoid it. Those guys were looking for a fight, and I doubt anything you said would have made a difference.
I would just be very grateful you got away unscathed and try and stay away from it in future like you usually do. Oh, and those guys weren't bigots, they were just retarded football fans that use that as an excuse to pick fights.

Football and bigotry has nowt to do with it, they're just excuses. Unfortunately theres a lot of aggression everywhere these days and you just have to hope you can avoid it.( stay out the pub, I hear knitting and crotchet are very enjoyable pasttimes and can be done safely and cheaply in the comfort of your own home!! Hope this helps![}:)])
Very glad you're ok Dave.[:)]

I have seen quite a bit of this sort of stuff since I have been up here. Rangers-Celtic and Hearts-Hibs. Luckily I havent been involved yet, but there seems to be something in the Scottish culture. Its just like England used to be in the 80's.
Glad you werent harmed, Dave. Its good to hang out with hard mates.

I have decided to just stay away from that pub as its not the first time this sort of thing has happened when I have been in it. When an old firm or Edinburgh derby game is on its always chaos in that place.
Bit rubbish though that I have to avoid a pub because of idiots.[:(]
Got a bit of a sore arm this morning and a cut on my hand[B)]...also got a mega hangover and have to work until about 5pm tonight[xx(]
Hopefully those other two guys feel quite a bit worse than I do though

you cant always avoid them, so make sure they they are finished quickly! "wink"
im an ex doorman and you'd be suprised how often you CAN avoid fighting, its just a case of having to defuse the situation sometimes by taking a load of grief verbally mind, it depends how easily you are riled up and if you give a **** about some drunks opinionhttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v341/ ... 1177606388
If your not on the edge.. your taking up too much room!0 -
Perhaps you should stop drinking in Celtic pubs with your Rangers kit on?
Seriously though as has been said these guys arent football fans. They pretend to be as an excuse to cause trouble. Not totally dissimilar to those who cause terror in the name of religion, but then that's getting a bit heavy!
If you're not living life on the edge, you're taking up too much space.- Each new day is a gift, that\'s why it's called the present -0 -
Agree with all the above, but particularly Naz-T's comment about whether or not you care about someone else's opinion. Basically, I don't believe you can always avoid a fight, but I think it's just a matter of deciding what's important to you. If you fight, sooner or later you'll come across someone better than you, and you'll lose. If the issue at hand isn't important enough to you to risk that, then walk away, take the abuse, keep your mouth shut, whatever it takes. That said, as has been pointed out a few times already, prevention is better than cure, and you're quite right to avoid known trouble spots altogether; yes, it's a bit rubbish, but far better than the alternative.

I did try the 'talking my way out of it' approach initially, and even made a joke about Rangers losing the title again but once someone takes a swing at you it kinda makes the decision for you.
Its right what the Major says about sometime you will lose but I wasnt going out for a fight, it just happened.[:(]
[:D]Liked the wearing a Rangers strip to Celtic bar comment...made me laugh which is what I need right now[:D]

And it's at that point that the "what's important to you" that's on the line stops being personal pride and becomes personal safety, of course. Then, as you say, it's entirely justifiable to protect yourself, and you even have the law on your side, thank goodness.
Personally, Dave, I can't see anything in what you've said about which you should feel you need to reproach yourself. Better still that this wasn't the time you found the person who's better than you.

Glad your okay dave, makes us liverpool boys a bit better now eh.Seriously though, being in the wrong place at the wrong time is always scary and time for quick decisions.Personal pride, forget that, and forget what the law says because that will cloud your judgement too.If you dont fancy the fight get out of there,if you have to fight do what you have to do to keep safe and then get out as quick as you can.Your better to be nicked and to be alive than a victim.Unfortunately when confronted by mindless irresponsible idiots you are liable to suffer in someway.See it like that and not being there in the first place aint so bad after all :-)

Odd oh if I was in a pub talking about who was better, Oli Beckinsale or Liam Kileen (ok, so not right now poor lad) we'd probably not end up in a brawl.
Football fans are pathetic, especially considering 99.9% of them don't even play!

Bit of a sweeping comment there - "real" football fans are generally against the thug element at football aswell. I doubt either of those idiots last night go to Celtic games and are the kind of "fans" that clubs try to get rid of.

Exactly my point major ,thats why i put a smiley face.I had a very good mechanic from halfords put my first bike together,i wanted vegeeta to think about what he had said, because thats not the first time he has said something like that. How anybody can label us all the same is beyond me tbh.

Yup, clocked the smiley, Ninja. Mind you, I'm wondering if your tongue-in-cheek generalisation might not be closer to the mark than Veg's serious one.
Less controversially, though, I've seen people using all kinds of excuses for picking a fight. It just seems that sex, religion, politics and football are stock favourites. Ah, well...

Bad news that Dave. The last thing you need when out for a beer with mates. As you know I'm all for people having their own opinions and i'd rather walk away from hassle but some times some people won't listen. I'm glad they got a kicking. Maybe they'll learn from it but somehow i doubt it.[:)]
