New holotech (left-fell off riding..help).
Hello
just spent 180 plus buying bits for my bike, pretty much every thing expect a frame.
One of the parts was a new hollowtech 1 crank + new bottom bracket, I had fun removing the old one.
So I installed the new BB and the new hollowtech 1 (black) and did it up nice and tight, it was like a cap with an allan key through the center.
I knew it would be some thing which could work its way lose so boy i did it up nice and tight.
I would say I have sent about 15hours plus on the bike, a few hard hours.
Well the darn left side of it came off, ok I was pulling wheelys but man I am really disa pointed.
Im a computer engineer so im used to doing bolts up in racks and such so believe me it was tight.
Any one got any input on this. The left side threads of the octogon link or what ever got a bit ripped, still looks useable.
That does leave where can I buy a replacement.
Can you buy a seperate left side crank arm, which has a safe method of tighting?
Advice appericated.

I would probably think that you originally did it up too tightly, and so stripped the threads. I don't think you can just buy a left crank arm...
In future I'd recommend a torque wrench with a setting of approx 44Nm.

i suspect you fecked it up doing it up to tight...
normal thing is to thread lock the cap and do it up finger tight...

HT1? will not have been tight enough. they do need to be tighter than rack bolts by quite a bit.

i suspect you left something out. from what you have said of tightening up allen keys, you haven't mentioned the torque cap part. you should have tightened up the torque cap part first to tighten things across the bottom bracket, and then the allen keys should be used to simply hold it in place there after.
if you did all of those steps then you are fine. but you can screw it up easy by over tightening. also if your BB is not faced properly you could have problems.

Bogey, this is hollowtech 1, and IIRC there is no preload cap for HTI because it is just hollow cranks and a standard bb.

I have very rarely seen these come loose when torqued properly. Madison may be able to supply you witha new crank arm. Also they usually give some warning before just falling off!

I checked the right hand side cup/bolt (drive).
It was also lose, I was able to unscrew it with easy with my finger. this is after tightening it with the allan key.
I spent the extra five minutes on this on installation because I know rotating or coutner rotating can work free.
Off the record guys I emailed the guy who sold me this and I gave him a peice of my mind, I gave him reference to the hollowtech 2.
See how the design was altered for the affixing to the bb, why do you think they did that..
I am keeping this locked up just how vex I am.
I have money and Im asking the guy what I should do on this one, I knew it. when I bought this I thought to myself should I spent œ50 or œ80 and look whats happend, Ive nearly killed myself on the road in traffic.
What a **** design, every thing else is perfect on my bike, ive spent like œ250 on parts. no more, XT brakes, lx shifters, brake leaves, œ18 tires, mach 1 wheels, xt gear cables.
This is what I should have bought.
VERY VERY CROSS WITH Shimano, NOT ONE BUT BOTH SIDES OF MY Hollowtech I worked free inside of 18 hours of riding time.
Im 31 and have worked with tools since 13, ok I spent 2 hours fitting my front derailer just perfect but it was not an installation issue.0 -
If its a new part its always going to come lose at first, probably just need to keep retightening it, inless you've fooked the threads as said.

as a matter of interest how tight did you do it up?

not overly tight, I think I did it by hand then used an adjustable wrench to grab the end of the allan key and applyed reasonable force.
If I had to say how tight it was I would say tight leaning just, towards being very tight.
I did do it up enough, interesting for me it happend to the right side also.
I was quite please it took a allan key I was able to get leverage in the tighting, not really helped much but I was able to tighten it with my new 8-12 peices allan keyset.
I had the darn bike in my bedroom not in the garage I took the whole thing seriously, I had a lot of componets to fit and used partools ./ repair as a reference point / plus docuemenation with parts althought the crank did not actually come with docuemenation, nor did the bb but again I did a page copy of parktools.
Im going to check my email shortly to see what the guy has to say, I dont blame the guy but my head under a lorry tire would not have been very nice, a crank snapping or braking is right up there with your chain snapping.
Thats also why i went the extra mile and bought a hyperglide expensive one.0
