I'm interested in the Stumpjumper FSR, which is the best one to go for, elite, pro etc, also is there any other good alternatives to this bike, it will be my first bike for about 5 years now, i'll be using the cycle to work scheme also.

If cycling to work is your thing, I'd buy a hardtail, be a lot lighter and faster.

My route to work is a long off road trail about 3 mile, perfect for mountain bikes, how good is this bike? and how long does the cycle to work scheme take to apply for and complete?0

That depends on your employer I guess.
You need to try a few bikes out if you can. Be aware that many places are limiting the bike value to 1000 now with this - both employer and retailer.
The bike is very good, but again you should try it first for size, gometry and suitability. Its light, well specced and well regarded.

I'm a Director of the business i work for, will that make any difference? why limit people to œ1000 for a bike?0

This text outlines the scheme well:

It may make a difference! As far as I am aware the employer meeds to apply for an extra liscensce to cover bikes over 1000 pounds, and somey shops limit the bikes to this because people were abusing the scheme to get bikes on the cheap for not riding to work. Halfords for one imposed a 1k limit.

Tohogg, I'd condsider a Hardtail, as to be Honest I can't think of anything in the riding I've done around Durham, that can't be done on a Hardtail, and Spesh FSR's, although good bikes, have quite a few bushings and pivots that can wear on the suspension which means that you're going to have to keep on top of the maintenance, which is fine, but I know that if it were me, I'd just want a bike I can jump on and go to work every day.

After all of the posts above...on a 1k bike...hardtail...Scott Scale 40 (1100 pounds, but maybe with a discount) or Specialized Rockhopper Pro disc.
If a FSR Stumpy...Elite...all the above models have really expensive service costs (mainly because of the brain)

I've just set up such a scheme and gone down this route with which bikes, you can spend more than œ1000 but the company will need a credit licence to do so and it's more hassle than it's worth. I tried the stumpjumper XC today, really nice bike but decided to go for the stumpjumper HT Comp after riding them all, lovely bike and nice and light and I got a good deal meaning minimal outlay by moi

did you use the cycle to work scheme then taffy? it seems so complicated to me, i want a bike for around œ2k but i can pay for it straight away, i hate loans and credit aggreements, can i claim the vat back other costs if i pay upfront?0
-
Yes I did, I paid the extra myself, it really is very simple through the cyclescheme, the bike shop gave me a receipt and when I get my password and username through I simply log on to the extranet and type in the details of the bike and where it comes from and they then send you a voucher which you give to the bike shop on collection. The company claims the vat back and the bike goes on the balance sheet as an asset and then the employee pays for it through their salary over 1 year or 18 months, so in effect it's a 0% loan. The employee also saves income tax and NI on the value of the bike and and the employer saves the ENI contributions as well.
A 2k bike shouldn't be a problem if you have decent employees and a decent LBS that are accommodating[;)]

I go the Stumpy for œ1500 through ride to work scheme. The max voucher I was allowed was œ1000 also, but there are no problems payimng more. All you have to do is hand over the cash there and then over œ1000. Easy!!0

If the shop lets you...
