Buying advice, GT Agressor XCR?

Hi all,
I'm looking to get a new bike for about œ600/œ700.
I currently have a Gary Fisher Advance 2006 with various upgrades and it has served me well, but I'm looking to upgrade.
The bike I've seen which I like most is a GT Agressor XCR which is œ699.
I ride over the south downs a lot and do a bit of road riding, but usually only to get to the off road areas! I'm happy with a hard tail.
Does anyone have any opinions on the GT Agressor XCR? Is there something better I should be considering?
Thanks in advance.
Russ

XCR is a nice machine: tough, well specced, but not particularly light, the emphasis here is on harder riding. Has a great frame and fork which defines its character. A few others worth looking at, such as the RockHopper Disc and Trek 6500: more trail/xc machines though. Test them if you can.

œ700 will also get you a Merlin, excellent value for money and specs are hard to beat

Hi chaps,
I popped into my local store and checked the weight of the aggressor xcr, it did indeed feel a bit heavy. How much of an issue is weight? and how much difference are we talking about? I also looked at the rockhopper disc online, it doesn't seem as well specced as the xcr but then Im no expert.
I checked out Merlin, If I bought one of those I wouldn't have a chance to test ride it which is a worry for me. But they sound good.0 -
The XCR is 31lbs IIRC: trek is about 29lbs. Not too much in it, but can be felt on longer rides. The key difference is that they have differing geometries intended for their usage.
