Tubeless??

Yep i know they are supposed to be lighter, run them at lower pressures and all that but does everyone actually like them.
I've just had a mavic 819 rim put on the front (hope pro II hub, spokes ?? black), so i should get a tubeless tyre to go on it but my mate has loads of grief getting them on and off.
Can you fix punctures on the trail or do you need a track pump?
what tubeless tyre can i put on the front and what kit shall i use to convert the back oh and tyre choice for the back to. i ride a stumpy expert 05 with panaracer cinders at the moment.
I think i saw a WMB issue which probably has the answers to these but it is Friday afternoon and I've got time to kill so i thought i'd get some opinion.
cheers, have a good ride this weekend if you are not stuck indoors doing chuffing DIY.

Do it, do it, do it! Purchased a pair of Geax TNT (Tube No Tube)tyres for œ35 or œ40, can't remember which, and they are superb, little tricky to get on and off but the benfits I've found far outweigh the negatives. Use a latex sealent and that will seal all those annoying thorn punctures, etc.
Stan's or something similar for the back would be fine.
Found the Geax TNT tyres tricky to get on (XM719's) but so easy to inflate with Stans. Tear in the sidewall is the only show stopper I've had and I always carry a spare tube anyway, it might of been a messy change but it didn't take that much longer.
Try it, I did and I'm not going back, besides I had to make my Spesh a little different didn't I [;)]

Do it. Also got 819's on hope pro 2s and the schwalbe's ive got were tight but with decent tyre levers a breeze to fit, not really any longer that standard tyres with tubes, no real seating issues.

I have Mavic Crosslands on my HT. It's been puncture atfter puncture on the rear tyre. I changed the rear tyre from specialized to Maxiss - same thing. so you have to carry with you spare innertubes for all the punctures, you have to replace the slime every time, Co2 cannisters to inflate the damned things, tyres difficault to remove, espcially the specialized tyre. Then - i just couldnt get the rear maxiss tyre to hold air - I thought ***K it - and put an inner tube in it = peace of mind.

Don't do it.
Personally, I can't see any significant advantages. Especially if you run good pressures and reasonably good condition tyres.
In fact I can see more disadvantages:
If you don't run sealant:
-Get a puncture, you have to put a tube in anyway most likely.
If you do run sealant:
-It makes a mess.
-Takes longer to change tyres.
I have thought of loads more, but I'm tired and I can't remember them.

But are less likely to get punctures in most cases, and pinch flats. I don't change my tyres regularly, so has benefits for me on an XC bike.

I kept on getting explosive punctures from flints - they were too big for the sealant to seal.

ive used conti vertical pro 2.3 ust on mavic crossland wheels for 12 months & never had any issues.i dont think i save much in weight to be honest but running my tyres at 30 psi around dalby i notice as real difference.you do require a track pump to fit the tyres or do what i did carefully inflate the tyres with the compressor at work useing the adaptor i got with the wheels.

Futon, you certainly haven't had much luck and we ride the same areas I imagine. Oh well, don't mind comments that are based on actual expereinces, did you use UST tyres or normal Maxxis? I didn't get on with the stock Spesh tyres but got on with Maxxis. What system did you use? Only asking so that I know what to avoid in future[:)]
I'm a large mammal that is happilly running 30 psi at the moment but still experimenting with the pressure to find that sweet spot, no burping, no pressure loss, no problems so far.
Sonic's right (as usual), it's never going to be something that's for everyone.

I used the proper UST kit, tyres, slime, wheels = constant puntures. It just got too expensive. I got too many punctures for it to be bad luck IMO. I allways got the punctures at high speed on flinty trails - but slowing down to prevent them somehow seems to defeat the point.

You're correct that you dont need slime for UST rims but it does help preventing punctures on the trails.
With regards to benefits of Tubeless, I have Crossmax ST with tubeless tyres and Stans No Tubes to prevent punctures and had no problems at all other than the intial set up but used an air line and it went up straight away.

No, Try it. I ran some michelin all mountains for 1 year and no dramas (punctures wise). They accelerate faster which is always a good thing and if you don't like the way they feel or perform then just put an inner tube in. Hardly expensive.
But as you can tell so far by some of the responses it is a personal thing.0 -

You don't need it - but it's usefull for thorn/gorse punctures - a real problem on the Sussex Downs.
My Bike

The only problem I've had going tubeless was caused by a flint on the South Downs on my first outing so I know where you're coming from. Almost gave up there and then but have had zero flats/problems since, I'm gonna stay away from where you ride Futon, just to be on the safe side though. [;)]

blimey you lot have been busy over the weekend.
I feel i know more but i'm not a lot wiser. Flints will cause holes and there is a good chance of getting punctures from thorns, you can accelerate faster and use slime. i'm still concern about being able to get air back into the tyre if out on the trail.
i'll have a look at some of the tyres mentioned and some stans slime stuff.0
