Top or bottom swing...?
HI all,
I know I need a top pull front mech for a frame, does it matter if I go for top or bottom swing? +s and -s or each?

Most front derailers use a parallelogram which is fixed (attached to the derailer body) at the top, with the moveable cage attached to the bottom link of the parallelogram. Many of the newer Shimano units are built "upside down": the bottom of the parallelogram is fixed in place and the cage attaches to the top link.<hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></blockquote id="quote"></font id="quote">
So I'm guessing yours is Bottom Swing as that sounds more conventional but f**k knows to be honest. Just trying to be slightly more helpful than mudface. [:P]

Basically its the position of the clamp that you are worried about. They differ: will it foul anything?

bottom swing
The derailleur cage is mounted to the bottom of the four-bar linkage that carries it. This is the most common type of derailleur.
top swing
The derailleur cage is mounted to the top of the four-bar linkage that carries it. This alternate arrangement was created as a way to get the frame clamp of the derailleur closer to the bottom bracket to be able to clear larger suspension components and allow different frame shapes. The compact construction of a top swing derailleur can cause it to be less robust than its bottom swing counterpart. Top swing derailleurs are typically only used in applications where a bottom swing derailleir will not fit. An alternate solution would be to use an E-type front derailleur, which does not clamp around the seat tube at all.<font> <font>bikeybikey</font></font>0 -
Many mechs now utilize dual pull for cable routing.

I know the physical properties of each one (have Park book handy here [;)]), but was wondering there was a reason for why you would choose one over the other.
As far as I can see, there is nothing limiting the position of the clamp, its a simple tube up to the seatstays/toptube, doesnt narrow or anything. No bottle cage bolts. There are ISCG mounts, but they shouldnt make any difference.

Go for conventional then! They are stronger as outlined above.
