Juicy 7 question - pads and travel

Couple of questions. Changed the pads on my Juicy 7s from stock Avid pads to Fibrax sintered pads. The pads now drag on the rotor, and visually seem a lot thicker than the OEM pads. Have put the old pads back in and gently rocked the pads with a screwdriver to push the pistons back in but still the same problem. Is this normal? I'd done the usual up and down the hill 15 times and it's made no difference. Should I try again after 20 or so miles?
Second question. Lever travel. Pad adjustment dial screwed out and the bite point is about an inch away from the grip. Turn bike upside down, mess about with brakes, turn bike correct way up. Lever travel now half of what it was. I suspect the brakes need bleeding? Comments, abuse welcome as always!
