454 have a ally alloy steerer iirc and 426 have a steel one. I think that is it, because there are so many different ones at each number level

Dam don't want a steel steerer tube as they go rustly but i don't have the money for a alloy one [:(]

Steel heavier, but stronger usually. They dont rust if you take care of them, bonehead!

You have to watch water getting up the steerer, or under bits of the headset.

No, but if you can stop ingress of water then it shouldn't go rusty, then you just have inside the steerer to worry about.

You can get plugs for the bottom of the steerers i thought anyone know of one?

Been running one on my XTC for a couple of years - totally problem free - and as has been mentioned above, it does keep the water and censored out of the steerer tube.

Not really, it stops most of the crud and atm it is reasonably dry anyway.
