Everyone will have a different perspective on "Greatest". In fact how do you determine it?
Factor in all the different disciplines, and you'll never get a true answer.

To me there is no single Greatest, but my heroes are:

Jason McRoy
John Tomac
Myles Rockwell
Dave Cullinan

I know I'm going to get battered for this. Whilst it's very sad that he was not around long enough to reach the heights that he could/should have you need to define "Greatest" or re-title this "Most Influentiual Mountain Biker to the UK" or something.

two guys i ride with meet him at the malvern classic said he was a TOP TOP fella.. he wasn't THE MOST amazingly talented (but he did have great talent) but he had 3 things which IMO are the main ingredients for MTB'ing.

Fun
Laughter
Friendship

he won races on bikes that were broken, dressed up like a looney and generally had a laugh.. never a bad word spoken for a great man...

10 years the other week since his passing...

i have to agree he is not the GREATEST EVER mountain biker but he contributed untold amounts to the UK scene..

the greatest... hmmm i wouldn't like to say..

Who is Pete Laing, you may ask - well, without him we wouldn't have Caddon Bank, Plora Craig, Golspie Wildcat trail, Spooky Wood, The HH V-trail, Kirroughtree, Mabie, Ae... Never mind the racers, what about the bikers that put so much back in? And you can't get much better than the guy who's designed and built all the best man made stuff in the UK.

Not old enough to remember JMC, in fact I had probably just started my riding when he passed, but from what I have read previously the guy seemed to have bundles or character, determination & courage which coupled with the fact that he seemed to be a trailblazer must have made him one hell of a guy.
