I've just upgraded from CS, waiting for my 'classroom in a book' to come so was hoping someone might be able to comment on the fancy stuff i can expect.

don't bother with CS3 extended normal one is more than enough.

it's nicer to use than CS2.

I think you can download a CS3 trial, but its only for 2 days instead of 30!!

CS3 is ace. Some of the main improvements for photo stuff that I've stumbled upon so far:

Adobe Camera RAW 4 is ace and a big improvement on ACR 3, especially the recovery/fill light silders, parametric curves and the HSL section.

The refine edge adjustment is simply ace for selections/masks. Soooooo useful.

B&W adjustment layer with individual area light/darkness adjust. Brilliant.

On the down side, Bridge seems a bit slower. Oh well.

While i do use Photoshop, i use Illustrator more - anyone used the CS3 version of that?

Yeh I use CS2 seems to be brilliant, okay so I can't do the stuff that Hamish can but ii've used it to degreace my face on photo's when stood nest to the ladies [8D]

Jon, I'm just about to upgrade, but think I'll wait until there's a bit more feedback, (and until I finish the Intel transition). I use Illustrator and In Design as well as Photoshop, and find CS2 fine apart from the speed on my PowerPC Macs.

Hamish - the latest Camera Raw with CS2 is pretty good - is the new one that much better? Have you used Adobe Lightroom yet?

I jumped the gun a little, but i did get it at student rates (œ170 for Design Standard). CS was a bit sluggish on my Intel too.

I've not tried lightroom. I don't see the point as it's another UI to learn and I'm already used to photoshop/bridge. I'm led to believe that some of the slider adjustments in ACR4 are taken from lightroom, such as (I think) the parametric curves.

ACR4 is really an improvement from the previous camera RAW IMO with a lot more adjustivity such as:

- the recovery and fill light sliders are basically a raw version of shadow/highlights
- the HSL tab allows you to adjust the hue, sat and lightness of individual colour groups, e.g. blues or greens so you can easily tone down green foliage or boost a light sky.

I do like it a lot but you'll still get great results with CS2. Oh, and the photomerge panoramic feature is actually very good, whereas it was virtually useless with CS2.
