bike for up to œ650 ,carrera banshee x or hardtail

been looking at the banshee x for a while but when reading about it being heavy it puts me off,iv had a cbr dirthog full suspension then saracen raw 2 full suspension and now want to go one better iv been looking around and cant see a better suspension for 650 , but have been recently looking at hardtails. iv also noticed some old 2004 etc banshee's on ebay that iv thought of buying and then changing forks etc.

The Banshee X isn't too bad, although the pivots don't last long.

commuting,trails,occasionall d/h. but also want something i can mess about with mates on when there doing dirt jumping etc. As said before iv only ever had full susspension

That is a lot to ask a bike to do, can't think of a bike that would do all of that and personally I would be looking at a HT

i have seen that the carrera x has lockout so this would effectivly make it just like a hardtail wouldnt it?

Its the only place you will Carrera is Halfords own brand, IMHO I wouldn't be looking at full suss for less than œ1k, as I beleive that something gives in the spec, i.e, poorer spec, weightier than bikes @ œ1k plus

^^ exactly, and the frames aren't that good either, there just isn't enough money, you can buy a really cheap HT with crap parts and get a good frame, but at <œ1K you don't really get a good FS frame.

Agreed, for my money I would be looking at spending upwards of œ1500 on a decent full suss

well 650 is my maximum and would prefer a full susspension,also the parts on the banshee x are good,also there is still the option of a second hand kona stab or stinky , are those alot lighter and would it be worth loosing the 12 month guarntee for it. also what 650 hardtails would you recomend

Its buyer beware with second hand bikes IMHO, as on the surface a bike my look fine but you don't know what its hiding. It would depend what style most of your riding would take as to recommendations

well mostly i ride on roads to get to trails then if theres one there go down hilling my raw 2 seems to handle this but does nacker me out going up steep hills on the roads.the back suspension isnt the best but it copes and gives me more confidence than on a hardtail.

Bloody heavy, I'd guess near to 40lbs if not more œ350.00 for a full suss, you are asking for trouble IMHO

My old Saracen Dtox was 37lbs when I got it, but I got it down to just over 33lbs. Bloody hard work.

right..it seems that all i now need to now is if the 2007 carrera x is worth the money for the spec and if it will be lighter than my raw 2 if it is then i should be able to cope lol.

There's plenty of choice of decent hardtails for œ650 that'll take a long fork for a bit of abuse, yet still be light enough to ride all day.

Weigh your Raw 2 on the bathroom scales. You plus bike, then take your weight off.

Its well specced, but a one hit wonder. It will kill you riding it around all day. Also the sus is very soggy.

just bought my 13 year old son a banshee x he handles it with ease down trails and over big jumps. His friend has a specialized p2 cromo hardtail the banshee is far better specced and in my opinion not a lot heavier

40lbs is a lot! A hardtail for this money is about 28lbs, less with sale bikes. The Banshee is 36-37lbs. Need to figure where your riding is going. I'd be tempted to thrash the raw for shorter gnarlier rides, and get a nice 100-120mm forked hardtail.
