Bunny hops on a full susser

So im in the process of buying a new bike and its between a Marin Eldridge Grade and a Marin East Peak. I like them both but need to decide if im going to benefit from full suss.

Anyway ive taken them both out for a spin outside the local bike shop but when i tried to jump up the kerb (on both) found it ni on impossible (especially the full susser) im guessing this is normal given that there is nothing to 'push' against to get off the ground? or is there a different technique to be adopted?

How does this translate when out on the trail and faced with tree roots that i would normally have bunny hopped over on my ageing hardrock with no suspension? soak up the bumps i assume rather than jump? Just wondering as i quite enjoyed picking my way over small bumps and jumps :)

Thanks.

  • What you do is pre load the suspension so it is squished. The as it pushed back up lift teh front wheel and claw the back wheel up by pushin you feet into the pedals and pulling upwards. It starbge to get used to but once you do ti really good.

Its just technique, a little harder than a HT, just practice a bit and you'll get it.

  • Also raise your arms forward, remember it is heavier. But i managed to bunnyhop a œ100 full susser that one of the rowers has, it had horrible resin pedals so basically i had to lift the whole thing from the front end. Also try rotating your hands over the bars to help lift the back

Always remember to pick your Uni according to the local trails or you'll be stuck with nowhere to ride for three years!

Thanks, thought it may be just a technique thing, good to know. Just need to decided on which bike now :)
  • I have the eldridge grade....the 06 model though. Very pleased [:D] Its so responsive and so much fun to ride. Was thinking bout the east peak but the east peak is heavier and i didnt really need a full sus...stick with the hardtail unless you need it and as your chosing marin XC bikes im guessing you don't??

I have a 05 mount vision FS nd a Bear Valley 92 HT. The FS is far easier to Bunny. just squash the suspension first and it leaps into the air. Its a much nicer bike than the hardtails and will eat all those roots

Go FS, you wont regret it. even better than the HT by far

Marin Mount Vision 2005. Hope Pro 2/Mavic XC717/DT rev. Cinders 2.1, XT, Easton 70 bars, ODI rogues, KMC Chain, various bling
Marin Mount Vision 2005. Fox RL100/RP3. Hope Pro 2/Mavic XC717/DT rev. Cinders 2.1, XTR, Lots of bling

Cervelo S3 2011. Mavic Cosmic Carbonne SLE. RED. Q-rings, lots of bling and very light!

If you are new to mountainbiking I would go for the hardtail. Much better to learn on one of these... I am well chuffed with my eldridge grade too, but have you had a look at other bikes apart from Marins?

I pull the front wheel up and lean back far then whip the back up. If you do it right you should get a nice rolling action with the front and the back should flick up after it. I can jump about 30cm largish obstacles like this on my 130mm front and 150mm back giant reign.

I switched to FS at the beging of the year, and TBH i'm going to go back to hard tail. It may just be my local trails don't need full sus, but all it really does is slow me down. Althogh I am getting some nice jumps now. Razer, What you need to do if get some nicely pinned pedals (if you ride flats) When you want to bunny, turn your feet so your toes are pointing the floor, press the soles of your feet hard onto the pedals and pull up with the back of your legs, as your doing this pull up the front and with your hands twist the handle bars away from you, this helps lift the back end. Takes a while but can be done quite smoothly.
