wheels decided....almost?!

hi all, looking for wheels at the moment, current favourites are 717's on hopes (from merlin). just wondering if anyone has or knows someone who has tried these (see link below) and what your opinion is? they are very light, but unsure about how strong they are? (bike is a giant anthem, rider weight 75kg, ride around the peaks, macc forest etc).

Wouldn't touch them as general purpose wheels. If you race the Anthem and want a set for race day, then fine but for everyday use they won't have much in reserve with Olympic rims and 1.5mm spokes.

hi george, thanks for your reply. that was my concern. i have read on a different thread that the hope pro2 hubs don't have great bearings in them and can cause issues, is this right?

Not really, the bearings are fine, when they finally die just whack in a new set or an upgraded set from enduroforkseals and you're off again, someone said they carry 4 spares for if they die on the trail!

I've had no problems with ProII bearings but I don't do the miles that some do. I'm not particularly a fan of the seals fitted to cartridge bearings as they are designed to keep the grease in but are not designed to keep the weather out. Seals specifically designed for this are ususally much better, for example Shimano hubs.

However, like all cartridge bearings, it's just a case of accepting that they are a consumable item and are relatively easy to change when they go wrong. Plus, when changing cartidge bearings you are changing the inner race, rollers and outer race in one go whereas if the outer race needs changing on a Shimano hub it usually means a new hub as the cup is fixed.

I have ProIIs with XC717s built up with Sapim CX-Ray bladed spokes. They cost œ330 and weigh less than '06 Mavic Crossmax SLs. They are over a year old and I'm 97kg but they are still perfectly true.

hi, apologies for delay in responding, not been online for a while. definatly going for the pro2/717 setup (once i've done some overtime!!). thanks for clearing up the bearing concern and thanks for all advice given.

I'm 102Kg and ride Pro2 with 717 and revolution spokes with 180mm disk and they are fine even at Swinley
