Less kids cycling

Its all I can do to keep my kids in.We are very fortunate to have recently moved to a quiet cul de sac, with a green in the middle,so they can go and play wile I watch them from the front garden.
They get really grouchy when its raining and I tell them they have to stay in.
My 4 year old whizzes up and down on his bike and his scooter, sometimes forgetting where his brakes are,and coming face to face with the kerb.
The other day I took him to the park, and he insisted on doing the monkeybars by himself.
While I wanted to amke sure he was safe, the other half of me was willing him to see if he could manage it by himself, and sure enough he did.
I go to the park and see some kids, not being allowed to try anything.
I think the major,is entirely correct. It's the duty of any parent to prepare their kids to be responsible, and to be be able to fend for themselves. If they get to enjoy themsleves aswell, its all the better.

I think that says it all really. When my kids were that age I was always letting them do things like that because I was very tuned in to what they were actually capable of (and also used to damage limitation if they did fall), I think because I was lucky enough to be a full time parent. Its not something that crossed my mind until I saw my husband with them at the park. He hovered under the climbing frame and fussed over them because, as he spent less time with them he was wasn't aware of the rapid progress kids make. Parents generally dont spend nearly so much time with their kids these days and I think that contributes to them being over cautious.

On a similar vein, I watched a programme t'other night about kids with cancer and one of the doctors said that todays "germ obsessed culture" is paradoxically making our kids more ill because they're building up no natural defences and their immune systems are suffering as a result of under exposure to germs and bacteria.
I think when it comes to the safety of your kids you can go TOO far (says the non parent).
