New bike build for mrs, advice required please :)
It's been roughly 4 years since i built a bike so im a bit out of touch on the product market, im pretty sure that the shimano range still goes deore-lx-xt-xtr ? Anyway im looking to build my mrs a push bike on a low budget, can get a pre-built malt one from merlin for œ400 but that kills the fun of personalizing and building it yourself
So far ive seen the following : ( shed any light on the choices or reccomend me other stuff if it's in her best interest )
2004 MERLIN MALT 1 PLUS FINISHING KIT
*2004 Merlin Malt 1 Frame in all sizes
*FSA seatpost in black
*Q/R seatpost clamp
*Cane Creek C2 cartridge headset
*Frame is V-brake and disc compatable
œ99.95
Forks either :
rock shox dart 1 forks 100mm travel @ œ54.99
or
Manitou Six 2005 @ œ49.99 with a RRP of œ120
It's only for xc and will not be used for anything hardcore ( shes only tiny anyway so even if she threw it off a building her weight but maybe bend a spoke )
FR/Rear Gear mechs/cassette i'm considering putting LX on ? anybody think of anything else, deore would probs do but for the extra few œ might aswel have LX setup.
Brakes, a set of well setup V-brakes will be plenty for her ( i currently have magura hs33 rim brakes which perform a hell of alot better than any discs ive ever tried ), which V brakes should we opt for, again price being an option. Theres a LX V-Brake Kit with levers/cables/calipers for œ44.95 from merlin, or should we look at avid ?
Headset is a cane creak cheapo included with the frame above.
BB/cranks/chainrings - This is where i need advice more than anywhere, ive only ever ridden trials/dh so my knowledge of these is very poor. Which BB to go for ? not too expensive, shes only light so doesnt need to be anything uber strong.
Wheels, i'm not building the wheels myself as theres too many places that offer decent pre built wheels.
Decent comfy seat needed also ( again, not too pricey ).
Pedals will probs slap some dmr v8's on there, i have azonic a frames that are 4 years old but she's not worthy of em lol.
Stem/Bars again not too pricey.
If ive missed anything its because its taken me ages to write this thread !
Cheers in advance guys.

Personalising is one thing, but do you know the frame will fit an be suitable? Think this way: frame, fork wheels. the forks you mention are awful, totally undamped and will spoil an aotherwise good build. You need to go and try some bikes.

Gonna take her to merlin on tuesday to find out what size frame she is, wheels will be mavic rims ( not sure which yet ) on a shimano hub ( again not sure which one to go for as of yet ), will have a look around for forks if nothing is found she can have my dated marzocchi z3's, not the greatest fork but served me very well during my dirt/dh period.0

Z3 is a good fork, and you are doing the right thing by trying them out. Best of luck, hope you find what you want.
