Went on the trials yesturday half way through
my shifting went to pot on the rear mech thought
it might just be a lose cable so stayed in a safe
gear to get it home

Well had a closer look this morning and noticed
my rings were all lose, then took the wheel off

well thats me off the road, guess I need a special
socket to tignten it all back up

They are custom build wheels from Merlin who also
fitted the cassette less than a month ago
pretty disapointed with them [V]
they told me it would come fully fitted, shame they forgot
to tighten it

Yeah, that happened to me on my klien when I first had it. Someone forgot to 'gorilla' the locknut on. Dead easy to fix, you can either go to any LBS to get a lockring nut, or you can kill two birds with one stone and get one of those tool combos that have a chain whip + lockring 'spanner', former about œ5 at most, latter about œ12-20. If you get a shimano one that has a hole in the back then you can use it for your centrelock rotors. My one works on the front disc rotor but the back wheel is too dished.
Oh yeah if it is a sram rear cassette don't over 'gorilla' it or you can crush the cassette... apparently.

I know its shoddy, but TBH it will be a useful tool to have as I found last week when I had to strip down my freehub and clean it all.

The chain whip is only used to undo the cassette tensioning nut. To tighten it, the ratchet mechanism of the freehub will hold it.

Its a simple job, and nowt to worry about.

Hey, sorry to hyjack the post but i have the same problem, but mine hasnt fallen apart, yet ! im unsure of which tool i need to use as they look very similar,

the cassette i have is a shimano cs-hg 50

which tool should i get, Tool 1, Tool 2

I have read the park tools section on cassettes and its confused me lol, as i just need to tighten the cassette do i need a sprocket chain whip? also is this the only tool needed ?

You need tool 2. Both do the job but the shorter one allows you to tighten the nut on the quick release axle while the tool is in place. This ensures the tool's tiny teeth are set in place before wrenching off the lockring. Undo the nut after releasing the quick release lever, take off the conical spring and slip the tool into place. Screw the nut back on and the tool therefater will work efficiently with a shifter.

shimano lockring
freewheel remover
Both available from wiggle. To trighen up the lockring you just need to insert the lockring tool + waz it down clockwise with the cassette side on the right to you.
