They are good for races, super fast inflation with no effort, but it is NOT worth the cost for just trail riding, and that is a fact.

Depends how much money you have. And how lazy you are.

[;)] If you are lazy, pumping up a tyre with a mini pump would do you sme good

Well I carry one with 2 cartridges as well as a small pump. When there is a group of you, you dont want to be waiting around for 10 mins while you take it in turns knackering yourself with a pump trying to get back over 40 psi. 10 seconds, one cartridge and a cinder 2.1 is at 40 psi

I use them all the time, rather than carrying a pump.
Regarding the cost, i'm either very lucky or a super graceful rider as i very rarely puncture.
I've only had one all year and that was on the road bike!Roadie

you should really carry a pump aswell, they seem quite dear (at any other than the link above, 30 for œ16, bargain)

The second wind is a hybrid, CO2 + manual pump

I have an Innovations Microflate, which came as part of a œ15 kit from Wiggle (with two cylinders, head, levers, and patch kit in a wallet.)
I've also used TyreInflaters.co.uk to pick up 30 16g cartridges for around œ23 including P&P.
Two comments I do have about the pumps:
The cylinders get very cold in use, use either a neoprene sleeve (something like 30p from TyreInflators.co.uk) or wear gloves.
Secondly, one 16g cycliners will only fill a 2.25" tyre to around 35-45psi, so it's a good idea to start-off with a few manual pumps, and complete the task with the CO2 pump.
Other than that, I think they're invaluable little gadgets. Inflating a tyre in 30 seconds really keeps you on track!0
