Brakes & Gearshifters

Just recently purchased a GIANT XTC EX (2006)and I'm not overly impressed with the Shimano LX brake handles and the Shimano Rapidfire Gearshifters..... the brake handles feel weak and the rapifire gearshifters just look cheap..........

any advice on upgrades would be welcome

You could upgrade to XT or XTR but will be very costly. LX is good stuff, give it a try. Surely you should have realised this before you bought it?
