Indy Film rebates

So we had a cr'p film tax thread... now it's time for the opposite. This is one for the film buffs/snobs amongst us. The low budget/indy*/non-Hollywood films that you'd really recommend.
I'll start with a few of my faves, some obvious and less obvious:
Oldboy - this is how cool, violent Gangster flicks should be done, Quentin
13 (Tzameti) - one of the best taught, edge of seat thrillers I've ever seen
Downfall - I'm sure you've all seen it. If not then you should.
Braindead - before Peter Jackson went t1ts up. Disturbing but very funny
* indy as in 'independent'. No Raiders of the Lost Ark puns please.

Trainspotting: made for œ1m, funded by channel 4
Scum: Just fantastic

Apologies for veering OT but I am sure I have seen 2 different versions of Scum. Same story, same Ray Winston but I am sure many different other cast members. Did I dream this or were 2 versions made?

It's decent. But they spoiled it with the happy ending compared to the book, and too much of it was filmed in Glasgow.
Shallow Grave - another good, disturbing, low budget Danny Boyle film

Re: Scum. Good old Wikipedia:
"The story was originally made for the BBC's Play for Today strand in 1977 but was not shown at the time, although the BBC version has been broadcast since. Two years later director Alan Clarke and scriptwriter Roy Minton remade it as a film, which was then shown on Channel 4 in 1983"

Agreed Hamish.... Shallow Grave is a very good film. Also agree Trainspotting was spoiled by happy ending, and should have been filmed where it was set. Still a damn good film and very well made though

Taxi (1998) written by Luc Besson, superb French action/comedy.
Nochnoy dozor (Nightwatch) (2004) Russian fantasy/action/thriller.
My local Film Festival, now how did that slip in there... [;)]

When the book came out I was doing a student placement at Edinburgh's drug problem service. The staff there knew who all the characters were based on and the names were only slightly changed. I took a fair bit of interest in it, especially being an Edinburger.
I've just thought of another good brit pic with Trainspotting's Kevin McKidd: Dog Soldiers - very funny and entertaining

I thought Dog Soldiers was actually pretty poor, but that's just my opinion
http://www.flickr.com/photos/guilliano/0 -
The Usual Suspects was actually a relatively low budget film, by first time makers. Does this count???
What about the first Matrix film, which I thought was fantastic, although big budget
http://www.flickr.com/photos/guilliano/0 -
Usual suspects class film as is reservoir dogs
Wine is made to be drunk, I am drunk......
Am I wine?

Usual Suspect - yes
Matrix - very good film but I'm not sure it would count in this thread
Andy B - I was disappointed by Night Watch. It started well but I found it really slow and I couldn't care what was happening to the characters by the end of it.
Re: Dog Soldiers - Did you see the director's next film at all? The Descent. That was a pretty nasty film. Grim and tense but enjoyable. As Horror's should be.

I've seen The Descent..... think I have it at Kazoo's house. MUCH better than Dog Soldiers.
Full Metal Jacket.... lowish budget, brilliantly written film!

Anyone seen The Edukators? German film about a group of students protesting against capitalism who end up kidnapping a businessman when things go wrong. Recommended, especially for people into their left of liberal politics.

The sequel to night watch (call day watch) is out this summer. braindead is amazing, i haven't laughed so hard in ages. 28 days later, amazing for it's budget. Tron. Withnail and I.

I got Dnevnoy dozor (Day Watch) on DVD last year and it was, in my opinion, not as good as Nochnoy dozor (Night Watch). Apparently Dusk Watch is in production at the moment tho.
On the subject of Russian films, Zhmurki is a really cool little gangster/black comedy which is well worth checking out, even if the heathens at IMDB dont rate it.

Trainspotting - The book was alot better.
Not a lot of people know that the Paris Island sequence in Full Metal Jacket was filmed at Bassingbourn Barracks in Hertfordshire. A few of my old friends were extras in it.
