Hi Deception.

    Why desperate? Have you not had a look at any, or even nipped into a local bike shop to ask one on one advice? That is what they are there afterall.

    There are many brands of bikes out there, and you really need to do some of your own research by having a look @ some manufacturers websites and then seeing which shop does them... and then go and have a look, with a few test rides if you can. Until you help yourself, we can only give so much advice. We are not here to tell you what to buy, but to simply guide you and help you in making your own decision.

    So, try here and have a look @ what's on offer - and using the FAQ Forum on this very site too. Price them up (find as many as you can within your price range) and then go and have a look at them. Every bike will feel a little different, and this is where testing them will enable you to whittle them down to a select few... not just ones that have been recommended by other people or having had good marks in the mags - if you don't like them, a high mark won't mean a thing!

    Good luck, take your time, and carefully weigh up what you need versus what you want and then consider all the possibilities... being careful not to fall into the trap of buying a sale bike that is the "right" price, but is totally wrong for you.

    Hi and Welcome

    Firstly what is your budget and secondly what sort of riding are you going to be doing?

    thanks to supersonic and kal-el the advice has been sound.

    hi, apcmtb my budget is œ300. the type of riding will be off road and a bit of commuting. i need some help and opinions of bikes for that price range.
  • Well, as mentioned, you need to do a bit of fishing for yourself.

    In your price range, though, are things like the Giant and Spesh...but also...

    Claud Butler Rock, which i would avoid after my experience of poor frame quality;

    Older GT Agressor 1's, or maybe 2's. They lack discs, but weight less, and could be ideal for what you do if there are any left at a halfords store. Newer GT's also get discs. I think the New XC3 is in your price range too.

    And on their topic, there is also the Carerra Vulcan/Kraken/Subway ranges, which meet your needs too.

    Other than that, there were focus bikes, which I beleive have good reviews; Konas, which tend to be a little overpriced at this price range; and certain Diamond Backs and Saracens, though they dont have the street cred of say a GT.

    As previously mentioned visit a bike store or LBS, try sizes and feels etc, and look around for last years models especially for good deals...a last years bike is sometimes genuinely a third of the price of what it should be, not just what it was!

    All bikes mentioned are hard-tailed (no rear suspention) MTB's, which can be used for a little road, but mainly trails and tracks etc. The carerra subway is slightly different, in being a commuting rigid bike, but is worth a look too.

    Happy hunting.
