Mudguards
I would like to buy a front mudguard that has two sections to it but iam unsure at what they are called. Hopefully you know what I mean. I see alot of mudguards but can never really see which is better or at least value for money.
Is there a dependable make of mudguard I should look for or does anybody have any handy links at all?

(ps Dont know if iam blind or not but I couldnt find an editing feature?)0 -
Topeak make some, the SKS ones seem to be highly regarded
Trek 60000 -
Cheers for that.
This one looks great: http://www.awcycles.co.uk/category/Bike ... index.aspx
I cant really find a picture of a bike fitted with front mudguards. I presume they look decent enough but cant be sure.0 -
I have used both the Topeak Defender and the Crud Catcher, the Topeak was pretty good and the Crudcatcher was below avarage.
Now I dont bother as i couldnt be bothered with either.

Thanks very much for that. That helps a lot.
I have a crud catcher (or at least something similar) and have never thought of keeping it on when/if I got this Top Peak Defender.
Do you find that it is necessary to have both?
Also, is that how low you have your rear guard or is it just pushed down?0 -
SKS shockboard is better than a topeak defender, the middle bracket on the topeak is very fragile.
Both flap about and can fall off, its got to be really wet before i'll use mine.
Rear guards never stay put on a full suss, the back wheel pushes them up.0 -
The Crudcatcher stays on all the time, but the Topeak only goes on when it's really wet. The only reason I use 'em both in the wet is because I'm too lazy to take the Crudcatcher off again!
The rear Topeak Defender is mounted on the frame rather than the seat-tube itself, to leave space for a bag, and rear lights. This means that it's very close to the rear tyre, but that actually really helps with splashing! There's also an added benefit in that the Defender mounting strap prevents crap being flung into the clamp-slots.0 -
Thanks alot for that.
Stuart, have you actually used both the SKS Shockboard and the Topeak Defender?
S J P, Would you agree that the Topeak is very fragile as Stuart says?0 -
The Topeak front clip is a two-part affair, with a strong metal frame, and a less sturdy plastic insert. The plastic has unclipped itself from the metal a number of times on mine, but a quick press reinstates it into the original (the guard remains in place when this happens, but does wave about in the breeze a lot more!).
I wouldn't say it's fragile, but I've tried the SKS guard for comparison.0 -
And what did you make of the SKS? I presume you meant that you HAVE tried the SKS in comparison.0
-
That was a typo, " but I've not tried the SKS guards for comparison."
I have heard that the Topeak guards don't fit into 1.5" tubes though, if that makes a difference to you?0 -
Now that something I dont quite understand yet. Tubes. Is it tyre size?0
-
im really happy with my front crud catcher
Trek 60000 -
Ive just realised that the tube must be what they actually attach to. I'll have to find out whay mine is then.0

What fork do you have Sam?
If it's an RS Tora the the front Defender may not fit properly.
If this is the case, best to buy from your LBS. Or at least take your bike in to check what will.

The forks I have are XCM SR Suntour http://www.srsuntour-cycling.com/SID=si ... &tnid=1183
I do hope to upgrade eventually though and I have been advised that a Tora may be the best for me.0 -
The topeak front guard didn't really fit my Darts very well, but do fit my girlfriend's Suntours fine.
Still reckon it's pretty rubbish though, I got myself a cheap flinger set instead from wiggle (though they don't sell them anymore), much better. Similar to dirt monkeys I think.

So from what I can see the Topeak dont seem to be well thought of. The SKS Shockboard seems a step above and is as widely available as the Topeak.
ED, did you mean these? http://www.cyclesense.co.uk/products.ph ... b0s80p1003
Anybody tried these or know where there is a pic of them fitted? http://www.wiggle.co.uk/ProductDetail.a ... 53000058940 -
Some RockShox forks (maybe others too?) have a plug in the base of the steerer tube where it attaches to the fork crown. The Topeak Defender (and any other plug-mounting guard) won't fit unless the plug is removd first.
It'll fit fine in the 1 1/8" steerer you have on your Suntour fork though.
All I can say is that the Topeak Defender works, and I got a good deal on the pair. I've read all sorts of recommendations over the last year, some people say the Crudcatcher is best, others the SKS, the Dirt Monkey, or whatever. I have the Defender, and whilst I'd have liked it to be a little longer I can't really complain. It hasn't broken, fallen off, or let me down in any way, and it's mot certainly kept me dry and clean!0 -
Maybe my (front) defender was a duff one, the bracket in the middle snapped, the cable routing was near it and it got tangled up. Guess i could have taken the whole thing out but i was too lazy. It fell off a few times too. To be fair, the bike it was on had woeful RS judys, so there was a lack of any real shock absorbing going on.
The sks shockblade i use when its really wet. It did not bounce off the bike as often as the topeak. If you get one, protect the fork crown with tape or the guard will rub a bit.
I have a crudcatcher too, but don't use it in conjunction with a clip on guard!0 -

Nah, cheaper than that - œ13 the set. The front is similar to the SKS shockboard, the back is like the dirt monkey one. They're OK, probably the shockboard is better though.

I run with a Topeak Defender FX up front:

It's a good one & I like the fact that I can just use the rear half of it at times when the whole thing is not needed.

Is there any big difference in these two Topeak models? http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... delID=7376 and http://www.awcycles.co.uk/category/Bike ... index.aspx
The latter will go with my bike more but obviously there maybe be more important things to think of.0 -
Not really. The M1 is much the same as the FX, only it has rubber edging on it.
The fittings are the same.

Iam now unsure as to which one to choose.
I think its really between these two http://www.awcycles.co.uk/category/Bike ... index.aspx and this http://www.awcycles.co.uk/category/Bike ... index.aspx
Iam leaning towards the Topeak purely because of looks (the colours match my bike) but iam not confident in buying as iam really unsure if they will be sturdy enough. Maybe I should just take a chance?0 -
Mine has never fallen off. It was fine on my old Rockshox J3 forks and it is fine on the Reba's.
