chain or gear problem??
Setting up some gears on the rear. Am getting some chain slip every now and then. Checked all the indexing and it's fine. I think the chain is the right length. Used the two links over with the chain on the large rear and front sprocket (is this right?). Only when testing with Sheldons small on front and back and then back pedal it all goes to pot. The chain starts trying to change up. Now is that chain length issue or indexing again? Any ideas tech gurus?
Cheers.

If you are getting ghost shifts when back-pedalling in small small i wouldn't worry, because you a) shouldn't be using that combo and b) if you are in it you are unlikely to be freewheeling.

As above, that's really not one of the gear combos you want to use.
Is it ok if you use middle on the front?

Yeah know about the gear combo. Think the sheldon article was to identify stiff links by putting in small small and pedaling backwards. Wondered if the ghost shifting meant anything, and might indicate why the chain slip was occurring.

Stif links can be identified in other gears too, as the jockey wheels hop when the chain goes backwards.

well the problem came to light. The gears are slightly off, but that's due to old cable outers, these have been changed. Surprisingly the issue was eventually found to be the skewer. For some reason an old xtr skewer wasn't securing the rear wheel thus giving it play under load and in turn causing ghost gear changes. Odd to say the least. Anyway, replaced the skewer and apparently the problem now no longer occurs.
