Roof bars, roof carriers

Hi All
We're planning a trip up to the lake district in a couple of months, and want to carry the bikes on the roof.
Have had a look here, here and in halfords but was wondering if anyone has any recommends?
They won't be used particularly often so I'd like to spend the minimum for semi-decent stuff - not fussed about aerodynamic aluminium bars, just something that won't fall off or rust immediately. Oh, needs to be locking too [:)]

Thule proride 591 carriers (approx œ60ea from Roofbox.co.uk). Well built, easy to use & lockable.
Far, far better than any of the Halfords ones which I used to have.
I have Seat roof bars on my Ibiza (I got them with the car)
The Thule roof bars look like real good quality.
I wouldn't trust my bikes with anything else.

The Thule stuff is great, very solid.
However, I only have the need to use a roof carrier once a week, and opted for a 'Fapa Velo' at œ34:

Perfectly stable, and locks the bike in place.
I had standard Ford roofbars with the car anyhow.

I have the thule roof bars, I went for the Aero bars there
not cheap but imho worth the extra cost over the plain black
steel ones esp if you leave your bars on like me
but I got this http://www.skidrive.co.uk/cycle/cyclefo ... =BARRACUDA
I think it's better for money than the Thule one, because it has
tyre grips so just put the bike in the holder then you have two hands
free to secure it.

Fapa Velo, Thule 591, Monte Blanc Barracuda are all great racks ( I bought Fapa on ebay as it was a bargain
As for the bars, thule are good but it depends on your car? What car do you have and does it have mounts for bars?

Forgot to say, I have a 2003 skoda octavia vRS which has what I think are fixing points on the roof (two rainy to go out and check! But that's what the 'what bars fit my car' guides reckon too)
Both skidrive and roofbox do the Thule set with steel bars for œ90, so that's what I'll probably get (another thing about steel bars, are they not more secure? Couldn't you saw through aluminium bars with a junior hacksaw in a couple of minutes?). That's the bars sorted - will be handy for IKEA and ladders etc - now just the carriers
Glad to see recommends for the Fapa Velo - like I say I only want to spend cheap money because I don't know how that I'll use so often - but has anyone used Thule Freeride 530? Looks similar in design to the Velo but also locks to the bars, which the Velo doesn't. Both are available for ~œ50 for two - is it worth choosing one over the other, or are both much of a muchness?
Maybe it's another thread but how secure are locking bars anyway - is it at all OK to leave the car unattended with the bikes on the roof say at a service station or overnight at a country B&B? I'm guessing not at all, but I'm a cynic.....suppose the former situation is easily avoided and the latter can be remedied by locking bikes to a tree or something (what do people do with their bikes overnight anyway?)

Yeh, make sure they fit the bike. None of the Thules fits my Commencal Meta and the Fapa doesn't fit it very well. I haven't tried the Barracuda yet!0
