Catching thieves

There's a part of my city where they steal bikes all the time, almost every day a new post comes up about a stolen bike... It makes me pretty angry together with the other guys, so we think about putting a flashy bike as a bait and waiting for the guy, then rush him, knock him down and wrap him in a duct tape and call the police... Has anything like that been attempted?

I think those thieves are junkies who steal bikes and sell them to truck drivers who then transport them to other towns, Bosnia or somewhere and sell... I don't think the actual thief gets a lot of money for one bike, maybe enough for a daily fix...

To clip or not to clip, that is the question. Whether tis nobler in the mind of men to suffer the dings and contusions of unclipp'd riding, or to bind thy feet against a sea of gnarly singletrack and by these contraptions, ride o'er them with ease. To clip... to slip no more, and by clipping to end the buttache and the thousand natural shocks that ryders are heir to; tis a consummation devoutly to be honed. No clip - to slip perchance to be thrashed most heinously...

Always remember to pick your Uni according to the local trails or you'll be stuck with nowhere to ride for three years!
  • LOL! what a great idea - get the duck tape round 'em!

(photo of them in the act, and they'd be well and truly stiched)

Kidnapping... omg lol... We'll film him stealing our bike! There will be his fingerprints all over it... And I bet the police will know that guy from before. We just need to restrain him... duct tape, blanket, net, cowboy rope?[:D]

  • Arrange a sting with the police, they can arrest in the act and keep him. Much less hassle.

If you just need to restrain him try the following:

    1) fix the chain, so it will break on the first pedal stroke,
    2) cover the grips in superglue

He won't be going anywhere fast[:D]

Well, that would be the best solution. Bike thefts are rampant, maybe the cops really should do something about it! Set a trap with a flashy bike... Hmm maybe we could gather up and go to the police or something, will think about it...

  • I had a frame with a cracked head tube, I seriously considered cutting it to just before breaking point, then building it up with crap bits but good front brake and leaving it at the top of a hill with a crap lock

Worked very well on the Mendips. We had a bit of a problem with cars being broken into while folks were underground. Suitable bait was left while nearby bushes were occupied and the miscreant got a good kicking and told that limbs would be permanently damaged next time. Area was strangely crime free for about 5 years afterwards.

Just dont get seen and make sure you all have alibi's

If a number of people rush and restrain (with duct tape) a gentleman believed to have been in the process of unlawfully removing a bicycle and then you just happen to see the whole incident (as everyone else runs off), I don't think you could be convicted of any wrongdoing.

I don't know. I caught a guy stealing my cars radio and phonned the police. When they arrived they very nearly arrested me for assulting him. I was forced to appologise to the guy who'd just broke into my car!

  • That's is a crime unless you label the bike as electrified, plus mains often have RCCB (not sure if that is the right thing brain isn't working, residual current circuit breakers) so once the guy earthed it he'd short it out. Want you'd want to do is park the gate a metal grill and hook it up through the bike to a battery, but his shoes would almost certainly insulate him.

Superglue on contact points and a fixie is the best plan with no brakes for extra fun.

  • Ride whenever you are [}:)] man I like it

but do they have circuit breakers in croatia as
common as us, and I bet they still would have a
go even with a warning sign [:D]

Drip LSD onto the grips. Soon after they steal the bike they end up on a bad trip, paranoid as fcuk and halucinating! Serves them right
