Much research has been done and yes i have used the search function for both these bikes. Ive spoken to people in my LBSs and tried the GT but not the trek as yet.

Making the desision this week about which one to buy. The œ50 price difference isnt really an issue. I just cant choose between them, the trek has better fork and arguably better brakes but the GT has better frame.

looking to get some opinions from people who have ridden one or both of them.

Will be doing beginer level agressive XC, small jumps and basic technical stuff.

Thanks

I have just got a GT avalance 1.o and love it, im a beginner too, sorry cant give more technical info
    :)
  • I would say the GT is designed for slightly harder riding in mind. Slacker angles, beefy fork and heavy duty wheels make it a bike that wants to be hammered. But until you test them you wont really know. Both great bikes for the right people.

  • have you checked out the GT aggressor 1 sold at halfords? Has a much better fork than the evans/lbs model (Rock shox Tora) also has slightly better disc brakes. All for œ549.99....

The Hayes So1e's on the Aggressor are definately not better than the Tektro Auriga's on the Avalanche. Fact. I have the So1es and they are naff.
You can get the Avalanche for œ449 from my LBS:

Which leaves you œ100 in pocket for any potential future fork upgrades etc.

Not being biased as I own one, but I would go for the GT providing you have tried one and like the fit / feel.

Personally I wouldn't be looking at the Trek, I think they are over priced considering the deals you can get on the following bikes with as good if not better specs.

The XC1 above from halfords, the carrera fury from halfords and the 8.1 Rockrider from Decathlon

Now we will have less of that, stop picking on my perfectly good bike mate!

I actually chose the Trek over the GT, it just felt nicer to ride. Also didnt fancy the forks on the GT and definitely didnt want the Hayes brakes. So I would certainly go for the TREK again if given the choice.

At the end of the day it's all down to personal preference I guess.

Don't get me wrong Penfold, I do think Trek produce some nice looking bikes, I just think compared to others they are over priced, the same can be said about my Spesh for example. With GT, Giant, Carrera, Decathlon you do get excellent value for money esp the latter two.

I agree to an extent there mate. I was actually looking at the Rockrider from Decathlon but with it being bought buy my insurance company I would have lost out on œ200 if I bought it from anywhere other than Evans. That would have meant I wouldn't have been able to get the missus a bike aswell and would have missed out on the nice little ride like we had this Sunday along the Thames. lol

Exactly as you say, its all down to personal preference and I've had the Evans insurance thing previously myself.

  • I'm not looking at the Agressor XC1 or any of the halford specific bikes because I cant get the big discount (20%) that i can get on LBS ones. If i acctually had 550 to spend id get the XC1.
  • the avalanche can really take a good bit of hammer, i have had mine since feb and not had a problem with the bike, really well made an stong components that can take a rough ride,

    My GT

feel free to add me if you have got msn,
  • im over the moon with my Trek, in the end i purely went for looks lol

the more you look at the Avalanche 1.0, the more i think it looks like a cheap bike, the stickers could be a lot better on it

they are both very similar bikes and in the end i chose on looks as i couldnt choose on the spec, got mine for œ500

    Trek 6000
  • i love my avalanche 1.0 disc, but dislike this years, dont like the forks, brakes and looks, out of those two, the Trek, better brakes is the main difference for me
