Guisborough Woods - June 10th
Bugger me, how organised am I.....
Richard and I are planning an all day ride on Sunday tenth of June around Guisborough woods. We are gonna try and take in all the best bits that he knows, and do a bit of exploring.
Any of the other N. East lot fancy it; and any of the locals fancy showing us their secret bits (oo-errr)?

We now have a couple of local guides as Richards friend Mark is coming. He usually plans the route for their Wednesday rides and has been riding Guisborough for yonks. With Seagull and Hoopsy as well we should have a good local contingent.

Do you mind if I join you? Live about an hour away so don't know the forest so would be interested to find some good routes. What time?0

Pinchinthorpe car park (main Guisborough Woods car park) gets packed after about 10:30am on a weekend and parking becomes a nightmare. I would suggest meeting at Gribdale car park up at Captain Cook Monument. Most of the good routes pass that way anyway so its a good starting point and misses out the fire road and dog walkers that plague the main car park.

Is that the car park marked on the OS map directly north of the monument at the foot of the hill?

Yeah its north of the Monument. Steve - Great Ayton will be worse than Pinchinthorpe, yesterday you couldn't move in the place with people picnicking by the river. Captain Cooks is about a mile up the hill past Great Ayton, if you have loads of people meeting its a better location as theres just one car park and won't be full of people going for a Suggits ice cream.

I'm off all week and Richard and I are out on a scouting mission on Wednesday to find new bits of singletrack. We'll keep you posted.....

Don't know if you know this bit. At the base of the Highcliffe Nab there is the black route that heads off to the right back into the woods. Follow this, over the farm track and after a few hundred yards look for some singletrack curving away from the main track on righthand side. Run this track, it has some jumps and a stupidly steep exit run, it was quite a find when I saw it a few weeks back.
Be careful going off piste in the woods, only go on established tracks. The place was mined heavily before the trees were planted and i've heard of people being badly injured falling down hidden mine shafts.

Current plan is to meet at 10:30 unless anyone has any better ideas/objections. At Gribdale car park up at Captain Cook Monument....

10:30 sounds good. I'll see you there. What car will you be in so I can recognise you? I'll be in a dark blue Mondeo.

Just spoken to Richard, he is very keen to start in Great Ayton as apparently one of the guys showing us around (Mark) knows a fantastic downhill bit back into Gt. Ayton that 'we can't miss'.
I may be able to sort out some parking in Gt Ayton anyway coz I know someone who live there....

If you can sort out parking fine, just let us know where. I reckon I know the downhill he is talking about, I normally ride back up the hill afterwards to Gribdale.

I've spoken to my mate who lives in Gt. Ayton. She says we can park on her drive so we seem to be sorted. She lives on the corner of Newton Road and Station road, in the gatehouse to Ayton manor. Her name is Gerri and she is a crazy Kiwi, I will try and get there first so she knows who is coming but she says it is fine to park on her drive. She has promised to take us to the nicest pub for Sunday lunch and beers at the end of the ride too.
Contact me through my e-mail up until you arrive as they get sent to my phone; looking forward to the ride tomorrow.

Great Ride today, and it was good to meet Steve, Gordon and the other guys out biking. I have a good few scrapes to count, and the aftersun has been liberally applied.
Here is the GPS download for the route, may take a while to work out exactly which way we went and what order we cycled sections. http://www.flickr.com/photos/97643229@N00/539152643/
I made the ride out to be 26.8 miles with 1376 meters of climb. Could have sworn we climbed more than that though.

Totally agree Richard, todays ride was a cracker! Sun, dusty singletrack, coffee, cake, beer and some good company made for a great ride. It was bloody hard though, one of the hardest 26 mile routes i've ever done. Doing the same climb to the same carpark 4 times made it seem like a groundhog ride as well. Hope to catch you all again very soon.
BTW this is nodrog on Cazz's sign in.
