I presently have a 2000 Kona Cindercone with V'Brakes and its got to the stage where the components are giving up the ghost and a replacement is needed!
budget is œ800
purpose... mainly trails and roads in the lake district with the odd downhill
i've been looking at a giant (see below link)can anyone suggest any other bikes in this mould?

Eagles sore but weasels don't get caught in jet engines....

I agree with apcmtb. Look at what Merlin can do for you, you will be hard pressed to find more bike for the money

I'd agree with that too, but swap the Sram stuff for some proper Shimano.

i would agree too but i've found shimano rear mechs to be really springy and bounce alot whereas the sram X0 seems to be aloy more solid and get less chain slap.

Scott scale 40...very nice...its a bit more expensive, but maybe in a couple of months, when the new models start to come out you could get a bargain...if you can wait
check this website...some discounts

Er yeah, I'd like to see one reviewed rather than taking what their own blurb says.

cheers guys, i initially thought about replacing my older (2000) cinder cone for a kona model around the œ800 mark, but the components don't seem to match upto other bikes in this range!
are you simply paying for the name Kona?

So you would have been looking at the Kona Caldera, I agree that the spec could be better, esp when you compare with bikes mentioned in this thread.

Mine is custom built for about œ800. I hunted around for alot of discounts, and used some bits and pieces from my old bikes. Plus, on one or two bits I got discount for working...well, you'll guess where. But i've managed this...
Maxlight Kinesis frame - œ180
Rock Shox Recon 100mm Solo Air - œ207.99
Xero Element 1 wheels (Bikehut) - œ(RRP 129.99)
Deore M535 Hydraulic discs - œ120 for the pair
LX M580 Cranks and BB - œ57.59
FSA Pig Head set - œ14.99
XT Cassette, Sram Chain - œ43.98
Panaracer Fire XC Pros - about œ25 for the pair.
Deore Mechs and shifters, handlebars, saddle, seat post and stem all came from my old bike.
That grand total comes to...œ779.54. Just enough left for some nice pedals, which I am discussing in another thread!
It's not to everyones liking, shopping around and having the task of building one up. Infact, you could probably get something for the same money thats better. But I loved doing it, and love having something thats utterly unique. And the end product is actually very good IMO, both in look and ride now.

EDIT: lol cat sat on the keyboard! I didn't even mean to reply!
Is that Cinder Cone you've got the last of the standard steel Konas or is it an aluminium frame? You could probably sell it and get a fair bit towards a new ride if it's steel. I just saw a 1999 Fire Mountain with very average and outdated spec fetch œ235 on ebay.0 -

the good thing about konas is the price, while theyre over priced there normally pretty quick to reduce and you could get a last year model with a few hundred quid off more than other bikes.
the Merlin malt 4 is a good bike, good spec and seems to get good reviews, i have a friend who got a Merlin Malt 2 so he could upgrade the forks straight away but personally I'd aim for the higher spec frame. Malt 4!
At that sort of price range it might also be worth looking second hand, I've noticed a number of nearly new bikes going for sale here on the classifieds or other cycle forums as well as fleebay to get a real bargain although you do have to know what your looking for.
Maybe catch you out in the lakes... i just replaced my hardtail with my first full sus, brilliant fun!
