Collapsing leg.

Wondering if anyone else suffers from this or has any idea why? Been struggling a while with injuries from running . Shin splints, calf pain and the odd knee twinge. ( getting old...[V])
Lately though I've been getting random weakness in my left leg. It will just collapse on me. Does it quite often when I walk downhill or downstairs, but today I was standing still in a shop and my leg just collapsed!! It was WEIRD! And kinda embarrassing.
It did it yesterday too when I was walking across the kitchen and I actually fell over. Should I be concerned at all? Doctors?
It's kind of amusing really[:D]......but also kind of not![:(]

I suffered that for a short while, but lost 4 stone and haven't had it since. I always put it down to my weight.... I know what you mean, I was at work walking next to a workmate, next thing he knew I wasn't there- Thought I 'd had a heart attack.

Lol! Its just so bizzare! Not sure if I should take it seriously or just laugh about it really. Always think docs have more important sick people to cure too.
Doesn't seem to affect the biking yet.

I'm not a doctor, but maybe a nerve sends the wrong message, for the muscle to relax when you are standing, maybe it gets pressured and "deactivates" the muscle signal... My mom had a pressured nerve in the shoulder, and couldn't lift her arm above the shoulder, but she's ok again. Go to the doctor!
Guess neurologists are here for that sort of things!

Well the guy who invented jogging as a passtime died of a heart attack whilst jogging so it can't be great. He'd have lived if he'd been sat watching the footy with a pizza and a beer

Well, I don't think we were made to run for a long time, maybe only to escape from a predator or something [:D]
There is a big strain on your ankles and what else when you're running... I personally don't like running, but can't be detached from my bike! [:D]

Before I started working and could afford a new bike, I tried running several times, but never could force myself to continue for more than 2 weeks in a row, although I could run both long and fast, even do a sprint in the last few minutes...
I also found running on anything else than grass was simply to uncomfortable.

saz, this weird knee thing also happens to me and seems to be totally random when it happens and on both knees! like you say it can happen while im walkin or just while im standing still, no idea what it is and when it happens its not uncomforatble but really quite embarresing!!
i used to do alot of running cross country at school and still have to do alot of short sharp sprints with the ta, altho cant train by running anymore because the pain in my knees gets to bad! after for example a shooting competition were we will be sprinting about all weekend my knees are usually very painful on monday and smetimes even lock up making it difficult to walk! the leg giving way thing does seem to occur more frequently after a heavy weekend!
recently started taking cod liver oil and glycosamine supplements in an effort to improve my joints not sure if this will improve my old knees but will keep you posted with the results!

It sounds like a nerve problem to me, maybe siatica (spelling!!) But defo go to the docs as you could take a nasty fall because of it, and you want to sort it before it affects your riding!!

Hi Saz
I'd go to the doctor's if I was you, my wife had very much the same thing her leg just kept collapsing under her on stair's, hill's rocky or uneven ground, she thought the same as you didn't want to bother the doctor, then one day it went when we were out walking, normally it would go she'd catch herself and everything would be o.k, not this time she just could'nt put any weight on it, I had to carry/piggyback her 3mile's back to the car. my wife's problem turned out to be a under developed/damaged muscle down the inside of her knee..... she's fine now though, so go to the doctors you have as much right to his/her time as anyone else.0 -
Get yerself to yer Doctor - the noo!
Don't make me have to tell you again ;-)

Yeah...heard of them. I'll look into it, they could help. Its definately an age thing sadly. I used to run no problem when I were a student, mind you, I run further now, and up and down hills too. I often get random sharp pains too in my calves and, very recently, my knees. I'll go to the doc in a week or so, I hate going. I just know she'll say " Well, stop running then."[V]
Thanks for all the comments though.I'd wanted to know I wasn't the only one who just randomly falls over!

It's all in your head, saz.
I'm sure Andrew will offer to have a look at your legs on Saturday and massage the ailment away. And as long as he does that your problem will persist...
[;)]
It sounds more muscular to me but I'm only a (now bitter and twisted) psychiatrist who may soon be out of work thanks to the government's meddling and incompetence. The obvious worry is that it is neurological but it doesn't sound typical of that at all. Glycosamine supplements won't do you any harm but I doubt they'll do anything other than a placebo effect. It'd still be a good idea to see your GP and for him to tick another box in the 'mad' page of your notes [;)]

I too used to get the 'collapsing leg' thing when I used to do a lot of running. It would happen out of the blue, a few hours after a longish run, and sometimes even the following day or two.
Didn't go to the doc at the time, but spoke to a friend who races and is a physio. Who said it may be down to dehydration / lack of salts etc. and over-doing it. Drinking more + bananas etc seemed to work for a while. But it may have all just been in my head ... dunno?
It still happens to me though on occasion, but not so often.
