Hi.

I've version 5 of Memory Map and a limited number of the OS 25K maps. I need more maps and would be happy to obtain, possibly trade for, two maps. I need OS explorer 25K Maps 210 and 226. Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

are you familiar with Bittorrent? a highly disreputable way <i>some</i> people use to get their maps would be to get a bit torrent program, and go to say torrentz.com or fenopy.com search memory map and get the massive 27GB torrent file and just select the maps you want... (you don't have to down the whole lot)

its shocking what some people will do (takes about 6hrs) these days, and when the maps only retail at 100 pounds or so...

Hi, yeah, already there. Downloading a huge 23GB file as you suggest, using U-Torrent. However, it seems to have these two maps missing.

I'll keep looking for a torrent which includes these two maps. Trouble is, most MM torrents seem to be unsorted, so I won't know what I've downloaded until its done.

If I can't get them this way, I may have to ask someone to burn to a CD and send. All costs covered by me of course.

    Cheers [:)]

yeah i found that, you need to know what map you need, Azureus (another program) gives you a goood control screen for choosing what to download and what not to... i wouldn't get it all there alot of duplication on there... 25k 50k national parks all cover same area, get all the 25 around the areas your interested in, MM can merge them into one giant map for viewing

Hi, if you have memory map can you download OS maps onto a compatable GPS device? So on the GPS screen you would have an OS map? Cheers.

on some of them i believe you can but our GPS is 10yrs old and has an LCD resolution of 100X100, so such technology is a dream to us.

  • Hi.

I use an XDA Exec, blue toothed to a "Holux 236 GPSlim", in the back pack. Works a treat. I get the full map (whatever I've loaded) I can zoom in and out, I can start a "track" and see my route, as I go, or use previously recorded tracks and overlay them on the map. However, I'd prefer to have an "all in one" solution. Recently such a solution emerged, the XDA Orbit. Its a might costly right now, being so new, but its on my shopping list, preferably with windows mobile 6 on it. Incidentally, I don't think MM will work on symbian OS devices, which, if true, knocks the Nokia N95 GPS smart phone, out of the frame.

The orbit isnt too expensive at the mo or i wouldn't have got it to be honest. Cost me œ40 on a new contract.

Hi. Firstly, I am not a Memory Map or navigation expert. however, memory map is software which uses the OS map. MM seems to be useful-ish. I use it to see where I've been. It could be useful to get a genuine fix on your position while you're out and about. But as the experienced MTB'er will tell you, never rely on electronic maps while in the wilderness. Batteries run out, accidents can happen with your kit, memory cards can just go off and need re-formatting, etc. Therefore, its been said that you one should always carry a back up paper map. Memory map is useful for this too, along with most of the other mappng software out there, I beleive you can print your own maps at home, instead of buying a new map everytime you ride somewhere unknown.

Ref your Q about orbit holders for your bike. I'm not sure, but I'd be surprized if the Orbit was robust enough to endure being bar mounted. Also, whats the practicality of having a real time display strapped to your bars, I imagine that it would be very difficult to glance down at the display while your moving. However, I beleive that there is a GPS unit on the market which does mount to the stem. I don't know the manufacturer.

I an article I recently read, within another, ahem !, mountain bike magazine, April edition. There was an article titled "Coast to Coast". In this story, the riders came to a river, where they expected to see a bridge, had been indicated on their map. There was no bridge to be seen, so, in the abscence of the bridge, they waded across the river, only to be able to see the bridge, once they had crossed, a little further up the river. In that position, had I had something like Memory map, then I may have been able to get a reading of my position and then decided if I could go look for a bridge, etc, etc.

Still, my personal belief is that one should always strive to rely on good old Navigation skills, common sense and paper maps. Gadgets are useful, but as I've said, always have a back up.

    Hope this helps [:)]

As above, paper back up always required but I've recently researched GPS and made my purchase last week. Used it properly for the first time last weekend and it really is first class.
The set up I've got is a Garmin eTrex Vista CX loaded with a Peak District Garmin Topographical map (on a micro SD card). Routes are planned using the Memory Map 1:25000 Peak District map and transfered to the GPS. The GPS is mounted to the stem and personally I found having a "real time" display very usefull and easy to follow. Didn't have to stop and get the guide book out once. Let me know if you need any further advice.

i too use memory map on the xda orbit - it rocks!

regarding the torrent downloads, there is a separate torrent which contains the missing maps.
  • Stuartm555.

Your comments regarding torrents. I'm very interested, could you advise/identify which torrent I should consider and from which site. Please.

Doesnt matter which torrent program you use Bit comet, Azurues, Bitlord etc , or which site you download the torrent from www.torrentz.com is the best cos it searches all other torrent sites, and gives you several options. Most sites all link to the same torrent.

while talking Memory Map. Anyone know where i can get hold of MMO's, and whether anyone has the Exmoor and Dorking Reigate area QED (Elevation data?) Thanks

Try mtb# (http://www.mtbsharp.co.uk/) and click on Routes - lots of MMO's to download. Never used one in anger yet, but planning a trip to the Lakes in a few months using some of the routes.

  • Jon208, what price did you pay for your Garmin eTrex? I've been looking at importing one from the states at œ116 from Walmart.
  • These files on Bit Torrent, are they just maps or do
they come with the core Memory map software?

You can download the Software separately

I have got the ones from MTB sharp. Looks like I will just have to draw my own routes using the MTB mag routes.

Muddy Fox, I take it you talking about the Colour GPS? Cos you can get the Etrex Legend for œ115

Muddy Fox - That's a VERY good price for a eTrex Vista CX, after a lot of searching on the net the best price I could find was œ219 form Active GPS. Saw one in a shop on Saturday for œ360!!!!

I have to say that I think Memory-Map software is well worth the (very reasonable) price), without pirating it!

If money is an issue though, Tracklogs software/maps are cheaper if you only want a small area. They start at just œ9.99.
  • I've recently been given a Garmin etrex vista cx as a present and am keen to get out and use it, but the Garmin maps are prohibitvely expensive for me..

There doesn't seem to be the garmin maps available from other 'sources' *cough*torrent*cough*, but as apparently memory maps are, I'm interested to know if they can be used with my Garmin etrex?
Is it worth me getting my hands on them, and if I do, do I need any software other than the bundled MapSource to get them on to the device?

Though if anyone knows where some of the garmin maps might be, that would be one better..

    Any help much appreciated,
    Edward

You can't put Memory Maps onto the Garmin - it just can't be done.
If you mainly ride in one area then I'd advise you get the required Garmin Topo SD for that region (less expensive than buying the entire country) and plug it in. You also need Memory Map for the region you ride in. To be honest the Topo SDs aren't that expensive (œ60ish) and you wont realsie the full potential of the GPS without them.
  • Does anyone know of any other good websites to find mmo files of routes in Scotland
  • All.

I just checked my mail only to see that theres been some more activity on this thread.

Ref Torrents: The specific torrent I located is 23.75 Gb. This torrent includes the MM software, many 25K maps and a good few 50K maps as well as others maps. Some of the 25K maps are missing (hence this thread..), others seem to be duplicated. One of the 50K maps seems to have a slight corruption in it which means there is a thin band across the map itself. Still this is no biggee, after all, its cost me very little to download.

For those who are interested, try using u-torrent or Azureus. Install either of these or any other torrent program you choose. Then, go get your torrent file. Try Isohunt, the pirate bay, bit torrent share, one of these sites will have the torrent for the 23.75Gb file.

Once your torrent software loads the MM torrent, then, in the case of u-torrent at least, you can see a list of maps. The program will start to download all the maps, but you can stop this by selecting which maps you wish to downlaod and "skipping" the others.

I thought I read somewhere that Memory Map maps could be read in other GPS devices. After reading some comments posted here, it would seem that there is some uncertainty regarding this matter. All I can suggest is that some brave soul, try it, and feedback to the rest of us. I use MM on a Windows Mobile smartphone. The O2 XDA Exec is a bit of a brick though, so I'm not always inclined to throw it into the Deuter. However, HTC are soon to release an updated version of the P3600. When this baby breaks out, I'm going to consider getting one. Then, in one device, I will have all the usefulness of several gadgets, in a "one box" solution. The P3600, as well as being a telephone, can run MS office apps, surf the web (opera), run tomtom and Memory map. The P3600 has an in-built GPS receiver chipset.

Out and about ?, I reiterate, that one should always carry paper maps, MM will allow you to print your own maps, so its best to always carry a paper backup, if you're going to use MM on a handheld.

Finally, to all those who wish to use torrent/P2P data exchanges. Please be aware that there is an inherent risk of contracting virus or other malicious code. I would suggest that you keep your antivirus software bang-up-to-date !, in conjunction with using firewalls, etc.

Also, pirating software. In the case of digital mapping, I had a poor customer experience with a well known road navigation system company. I bought their product brand new, only to find out that it was way out of date, by some years !!. I approached them and asked how I could update my product which I had bought NEW. After a bit of wriggling ,on their part, all they offered me was a 10 euro discount on re-buying their latest entire software suite, 2 months after I'd just spent a 3 figure sum on their out of date software.

So, these companies have had my money, but I didn't get what I thought I was getting. Furthermore, growth in the digital mapping industry is projected to increase rapidly, with these companies exploiting the fact that everyone wants to update their maps. They configure their product so that you have to spend the maximum with them to update, with little or no regard for existing customer care/good will.

In the face of such corporate arrogance, I will now refrain from giving them my money.

Damn this bank holiday weather !

    Anyway, has anyone got OS 25K map 210, 226 & 237, please.

    Cheers [:)]
