M760 is the Rapid Rise (or "low normal") mech. This means that the mech spring is pulling towards the lower gears (i.e. when your shifter pays out cable, a lower gear will be selected).

M761 is the, er, standard (or "high normal") mech. This means that the mech spring is pulling towards the higher gears (i.e. when your shifter pays out cable, a higher gear will be selected).

If that doesn't help, tell us what happens when you push the thumb shifter. Does it change to a higher or lower gear?

  • Assuming it's a standard 07 Rockhopper Pro with Deore rapidfire shifters, you'd want the M761.
  • when i push the shifter it shifts to the larger cogs...lower gear if thats any help. thanks guys

OK, so pushing the shifter with your thumb is winding in cable, so you currently have a high normal mech. Note that the shifters will work with either type of mech. I have the same Deore 9-spd shifters on my bike with a Rapid Rise mech (a M760, as it happens).

So, you can pick the M761 and stay the way you are, or enter into a separate discussion on the merits of low normal versus high normal...

talking of this bike i as you may/may not know have the pro disc version of this yrs rockhopper, and as great as it is, i am getting a squeaky left hand brake!! getting a bit annoying now seeing as the rest is like a stealth bomber lol.. How can this be when the bike is only 3 months old?

Speed King: If you're sure you've not managed to get any oil or grease on the discs, it may just be that you need to go through a couple of repetitions of hard braking. Find a nice hill, or a flat bit you can get up to speed on and give it some punishment [:)]

Having said that, if it's wet (or even just damp enough), the brakes will squeak no matter what you do. I have the same bike as yourself and it took a little while for the front brake to stop making lots of noise and nearly 2 months for the rear brake to stop squonking!

To stop the squeel, you need to align the calipers accurately and make sure the disks and pads are clean. Then bed them in

Dont assume they were set up properly in the shop

Unfortunatly not steve lol, It happens to be a very nice bike so i think lots of people are choosing it as a good ride. I love the rest of the set up, in last months bike review on here they look at this bike and cant praise it enough !! The kit is great although the finishing kit could be slightly lighter, other than that, its a good package. There is only one thing i would say you should not apply to this bike, Do not ever, EVER add goodrich disc cable to the avid disc brakes i did this and it was a disaster, fitting is a pain and you inevitably have to split the plastic cover at the lever end to get the banjo to fit, and it sticks out so it isnt even a neat finish. Other than tht ... GREAT BIKE

  • Speedking, when i go for a ride and its a bit wet/muddy i sometimes get a squeaky rear disc brake, but it soon goes when its cleaned and i have done some hard braking, i think its the nature of these brakes.

yeah but mine gets a clean after nearly every ride, brakes are as clean as new.
I think i may go with madmole and check on the calipers then see what is happening.
