Need to get hold of a 14" Carrera Kraken 06(Womens) can anyone that works at Halfords help? (They don't do a 14" anymore)
And does anyone know the weight of the bike - I picked up a 16" and it felt pretty light, but I'm not a good judge!!

You'll be lucky, these flew out in the sales! IIRC they were 32lbs.

You want a 2006 model... not likely! 2007 models are already obsolete, IIRC, as they flew out of the doors as soon as they came in.
Nip into one of the stores and they can do a store stock search to see if there are any available [:)]

Looks like I should be able to get on of these in a 14", however friend in work said I should spend more and save for a full sus for my lad. His lads have orange 5's and are more into DH, I would rather be doing XC.
He is eight now (and very good!) and I want something that compliment his ability but don't want to spend thousands, thought this was a bit of a bargain and if I could add hydraulics and new fork at a later date. Although the fork looks fairly good on it anyway.
Currently he climbs like a demon, his current bike is about 24lbs and I don't want the new bike to hold him back.
Not sure if the women's bike is lighter than the men's?

Now available at Halfords!!!!

I'm hoping the one I've ordered in store is in silver and red (2006) as the one shown on the website may be a bit "girly" for my son. No idea why this is suddenly available, be quick if you're interested.

They never went down to a 14" in standard stock, so what was made should have gone, i'd have thought. Only the new one comes in a standard 14".
I recently talked to someone in-store about the same issue (a good bike for their kid), and Kona do a good range of smaller bikes too.
Indeed, the Kraken is a little heavy in the forks, which is dissapointing. Also worth a look are certain diamond backs, which can be specially ordered also, and far exceed the quality of normal store stock.
Also, If he's only 8, you're probably looking at a 24" wheel bike, unless he's very tall.
...Happy hunting!

I don't think you need to put this on EVERY thread, maybe start on new one?
Wouldn't mind some info on your blog on the weight and how you found the bike before you upgraged and what diff it made.
Thanks
Dave.

Update......
Kraken arrived today from Halfords, almost charged me œ199 for a Vulcan until I pointed out the mistake - can't help being honest, didn't want anyone getting in trouble and I've become a bit of a regular (idrive XCR, valour and now a Kraken in 6 months!).
I'll have to swap the seat as it comes with a woman specific one, luckily my wife's trek doesn't, so a simple swap there!
Oh and I weighed it 31.8 lbs - come on supersonic 0.2 lbs out, must try harder![;)]
Will give an update and some pics after he has tried it on Sunday at Llandegla.

Halfords in Wrexham ordered it.
I rang round a few local stores and was told they were obsolete, I then tried customer services who gave me the numbers of the stores that still had stock.
After telephoning a store in Enfield who had stock, (spoke to a really helpful chap, Dave Skinner - I think), I was told there were 10 left at their head office and I could get my local store to order one in (should have been told this in the first place I guess!).
Took a while, but I had the same issue trying to get hold of a Valour earlier this year.

Thought I'd put this on my own post:
Just weighed the front wheel:
Disk + bolts = 142g
Wheel / hub / QR = 1077g
Tyre = 1103g [:0]
tube = 192g
Put it back togeather and re weighed - 2513g total.
I guess the best option is new tyres? Would like to find something around 500g.

Always remember to pick your Uni according to the local trails or you'll be stuck with nowhere to ride for three years!0 -
Rear wheel weight 1332g (assuming cassette weighs 358g)
So I'm looking at saving 1450g (3.2 lbs) by upgrading tyres and wheels (mavic crossride?) making the bike weigh about 28 lbs!

Just got back from Llandegla. Wow..... that's the best money I've ever spent, last week he(my son) was stuggling up the hills, today he flew - 1 3/4 hours (inc stops) to do the red and black runs (minus the old black) lost count of the amount of people we passed!!!
This has got to be the cheapest and most effective upgrade you could possibly do to the Kraken.
If you have a Kraken, change the tyres. Oh and I changed the tubes to Halfords lightweight (3 for 2) 135g compared to 205g.

Now upgraded the brakes to full hydraulic (œ60 from bikehut - 1/2 price) so I've now spent œ389.97 to get a sub 28lb bike, very pleased so far. No more upgrades planned for at least a year.
The beauty of upgrading is that the missus doesn't realise!!

Are the Lightweight tubes OK?
Got a 06 Kraken to for œ265 last September. Also changeds tyres - Panaracer Fire XC Pro (kevlar) and just ordered some Mavic XC717/Shimano XT wheels from Merlin (haven't told the wife yet!).
Not disappointed with my choice of bike so far! [:D]0 -

The bike is for my son (only eight), done about 30 miles (llandegla x 2 and a bit) of hard riding so far - no punctures.
Little sod beat me again today on the long climb up from the black run at Llandegla.
He's really impressed with the brakes - makes a big difference to him as they require less power with his small hands.
