Hi, i live in Plymouth, so i know Dartmoor is cool if you know your way around it or a map, but difficult for a non-local or crap map reader (I should know). Best "easy" bet is Haldon if your at Exeter, easy Adventure Trail with much more tech Red/Black routes on other side of the road...like a kid in a sweet shop i was...shame some of it is closed, but it's still a good 1 1/2 hour run. for just plain cruising off road, drive to Princetown and loop on the dismantled railway and bridle paths...gentle inclines with one or two rocky paths. Have fun...let me know what you do and where you go!!!

Ace cant wait..Found Haldon and its just down the road. I hopefully will venture onto Dartmoor and do a loop which starts at Princetown. One of the routes in MBR..so excited...[:p]0

Cool, but some advice first...start the loop at Burrator reservoir, taking the waymarked cycle trail up and out onto glorious open moor, round all the quarry with spec views, up to Princetown and then through that, along the main bridle way down ( and DOWN!) to Burrator, hence doing all the up first! If you want an idea of the route i can email one...

Got em. Thanks simon.
Which routes would u reccommend? I am quite an able rider and quite fit. I dont mind the climbing, luv the single track and of course like the descents. I will be riding alone.
thx0 -
Wayne ... i have'nt ridden the routes yet :-( they are on the list for this summer so i would imagine i'l be asking you the same question before too long
Hope you enjoy them which ever one's you choose to do

Of the venues mentioned to date Exmoor has the best riding (East Dartmoor coming a close second - check out the Becky/Grimspound area).
A bunch of us rode a 30 mile loop from Minehead west, totalled 1470m of climbing with some awesome singletrack (like miles of it!). Have to be fit though! It's not all on 'public rights of way' so can't point you to a route guide as such but welcome to give you more info if you want to get in touch.

There are numerous routes over Dartmoor, some that offer challenging off road cycling.
There are a number of loops that you can make around Okehampton army camp. The YHA is close by, they'll let you use their shower facilities for next to nothing.
I particularly like the short loop around Cosden Beacon, it isn't far (10kish) but it starts with a brutal 1400m climb, it also incorporates an excellent Stone Circle (White Moors) and a long triple stone row. The final descent is great fun
