Finding disk space...

Is there a way I can look at some sort of pie chart type thing showing me where all my hardrive space is being used? I'm running really rather low :( and that's WITH an external hard drive housing all things a/v

Also, what does a defrag actually DO? AFAIK, it just moves all the useless, unuseable space together into one block, or something like that.......!! Will it help the situation?

EDIT:
Hardrive is (a measly) 35 or 40GB
About 32GB used, 2GB free
Program Files is only 3.5GB

check the sizes of all your music/vid/games/program files? Or files that usually take up a lot of space.

Music + Vid are all on hardrive, and I don't have THAT many games/programs, was just wondering if there was some way of seeing it all graphically so I know straight where to head. How big are temp folders normally?

Defrag rearranges the parts of files in order so the harddrive doesn't have to move the head as much to read the file, thus improving the life of the hardware.

Oops, My Docs would appear to be bigger than expected.... 12GB, and again, that's without any music in there!! I think most of it is in fact in My Recieved Files tbh
EDIT: nope, it's not really al that obvious where the space is being taken up in there. This is ooooooh!. I need a bigger hard drive!

Will delete the temps as well, cheers Mian

Found it, it's the one I used a while back and it's really good. I don't know how good compared to the one above as I haven't used that one. But still I'd give it a go! Might have some crap lurking somewhere...

Oh, and if you haven't, installer CCleaner. Run that, it removed a heck of a lot from mine, but space isn't really an issue now I've got a 750gb external HDD...

Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Clean up

Through that you can delete any unnecessary files, such as the tempory ones... you can also delete the system restore points apart from the most recent, which should free up a few GB.. assuming your pc is running ok and has no problems that might need to use the aforementioned restore points.

If you want to delete restore points go into the 'More Options' tab and select 'Clean up' under the system restore bit.

Well I say 9GB because thats how much it freed up on mine.. it will be different for you, though if have never done it before, then it should free quite a fair bit.

I've got a Western Digital "My Book" It's great. Only downside is that my laptop is only USB1 which means transfers aren't as quick as they could be
