Ok so I'm going to be doing my test soon (I'm 17), and providing I pass, I want to drive to France, and visit family around Paris, but I am worried that there are laws that will prevent this.

Can anyone enlighten me as to what the requirements are for a new driver to go abroad? Things such as age, license requirments etc.

A valid driving licence needs to have been held for at least 1 year
    Must be in Western Script.
You must be at least 18 years of age with a full UK licence for most locations in France. Drivers who have passed their test within the previous two years are restrcted to speeds of below 110kph on motorways, 100kph on urban motorways and 80kph outside built up areas.
You must be at least 20 years old and have held a full driving licence for at least a year to rent a car. Insurance is compulsory.
Additional driver and young driver / minimum age limits also vary by hire location.

  • I think you have to hold a valid driving licence in your home country, and be of the right age to drive in the country you are visiting.

However, someone once told me that you have to be 21 to drive abroad.

Its the had your licence for a year thats going to stop you on this one. Also if your renting a car you'll haveto wait even longer.

  • Its probably not a great idea driving in France that soon after passing your test any way's. For starters you won't have much experience, you'll be on the incorrect side of the road and the roads around Paris are fu<s></s>cking insane. Wait a couple years.

    Thanks for the replies everyone.

General concensus shows that I'll have ot wait until I'm 18, and Mr Fox, I know what you mean about Parissien drivers, my uncle is one, anywhere under 50 mph and hes cursing at everyone else for holding him up.
