I'm trying to buy a new bike. I Live in London and i want to ride to work (short distance) and also i want to ride off-road. I don't have much sence and i will throw myself and my bike down anything, so i need a bike/components that are strong and durable. Also want disc brakes and a decent set of forks..

What sort of forks are good?? I can't really afford to be upgrading.

I'm not to sure on what i should be buying. I have about œ450 to spend.

I have talked to a couple of people and they have suggested

And

Any help would be great. As i am clueless and have no idea what i should be buying or whether the 2 bikes (links) i have put up are any good?

Thanks

The Marin looks really nice. If it rides anything like it more expensive sibling, the Rocky Ridge, then go for it.

Both the bikes you are looking at look ok but things like the forks to me let it down. Rock shox darts are not exactly the most controlable of plushest of fork you can get for that money. Also both of them have ok crnksets but the bottom brackets are probable not brilliant. I would reccomend the 2007 carrera fury if you can spend another œ50 i know yes its a halfords bike but the spec on it is good for the money. The rockshox tora is a great upgrade on the forks alot plusher you can lock them out for road riding to. It also has hydraulic trektro auriga disks which are more powerful than 99% of cable disks. Like i say its just got an edge of more quality about it and it looks pretty damn good in the flesh to which is a perk. Just make sure you get the right size bike or it will be a nightmare. Most people get tempted to go for the tallest 20 inch frame. Most people can sit on these but it usually leaves you arching over which is not good. This all depends on your height of course. Like i say check it out great bike for the money and the reviews it get especially of MBUK is that its great for the money.

IMHO both very average specs for the money they are asking, for instance as above the Fury is probably available for about the same with a much better fork and I also like the look of the Decathlon rockrider 8.1 for £500
