Ok, now i know i don't visit here much anymore and i hope y'all forgive me for only comig back when i want something...

(do you?)

anyway, i installed broadband on my pc last night so for the first time in 4 months (since moving house) i can use the net at home. I had an error message pop up when i installed the modem (sagem thing i think, free tiscali rubbish) which said there was an error with the hardward and that i should contact the hardware supplier. then another message popped up saying everything was finished and i could now use the internet... so i did.

i left it downloading for a while (music, sorry i couldn't help it!)
and when i came back to it the pc was restarting. it had (presumably) turned itself off and was trying to reboot, but it was failing. each time it tries i'm told that i should start either in safe mode or in "last known working mode" both of which i've tried. only safe mode will start up, but from there i can't remove the hardware.

any ideas on how to get it going properly... orrr..

basically i'm thinking of remastering the system. before i do this i want to put a few photos and college assignments onto my memory stick. now, the files are on my username (called ryan)n the desktop, but only the administrator and lucy tabs show up due to the safe mode being of such large icon size. can I get into my "ryan" section of the hard disk without clcking on my own icon (maybe through some porthole in the admin username)

i'm properly stuck here and don't fancy losing all my work or photos. if anyones got any ideas give me a shout (i realy don't want to take the machine to a computer shop as it;s about 4 years old now and worth the small part of fuck all anyway, œ60 and hour labour charges just wouldn't be worth it.

any help will be much appreciated, be it the directions to remove the modem from safe mode, or just access my files so i can copy them to disk before deleting everything.

thanks al.

Ryan

Why wont safe mode let you uninstall the modem? What've you tried, and what did it say?

Admin *should* have access to everything that's everywhere. That is, traditionally, the purpose of the admin account.

Not sure about the modem, but as for getting to your files I think that the administrator profile should get you there. Once you log in using "administrator" try and find your files (My computer/C/Users/Ryan?). I would of thought this would get you there but it seems to simple, have you already tryed it?

If you see you're files but cant access them you might need to start messing about with file permissions

    It'd be C:/documents and settings/ryan/my documents

    I think.

Go onto your account, if you can, and go to My Computer then right-click on "ryan's documents". Click on the sharing tab and uncheck the "Make this folder private" box. Should work.

EDIT: You could also delete the account then choose to save the files. This saves your files to the desktop of the account you used to delete it.

Isn't part of the problem that he can't get into his account?

yes, thats how I understood it.

I hate it how XP makes it so hard to get into you're own files when something goes slightly wrong

    I like the last idea.

Avi, basically i went into safe mode and then add/remove programmes. chose to uninstall the drivers for said modem and it told me it couldn't install from this directory (which got me rather pissed off seeing as i don't want to install anything)

When i go to "my computer" in the admin logon, i get options for viewing lucys documents but not ryans. is it because ryan is also an admin account?

It may be set to private, does it not show up at all. Or does it not let you in when you click on it?

  • You have tried unplugging the modem and turning the computer on?

What do you mean by in safe mode the icons are so large?

Can you not reduce the resolution using right click on the desktop?

No, you can't change the resolution in safe mode, it bypases any advanced graphics features and so anything above 640*480 is unavailable. Certain graphics cards (some matrox ones) will allow you to go up to 800x600, but I think that's it.

PG, start it up in safe mode, then once you're at the desktop, hold the windows key and tap 'E'.
This should bring up windows explorer.
From here, you should be able to navigate to c:\documents and settings\[your user name].
    your files should be there.

Oh, and it sounds like it's a USB modem. AVOID these at all costs.

From what I've understood, USB broadband modems used a software cludge to work. I've had numerous problems getting internet connection sharing to work with USB modems.
As of Vista (and possibly server 2003) MS no longer supports any USB modems.

Besides, an ethernet modem can be connected 24/7, which means as soon as your computer boots, you're online, no more waiting for it to sync to the carier signal and log on. Ethernet/wireless also makes it much simpler to connect your Xbox, PS2 or PS3 or nintendo whatever to the net.

I've been using usb broadband modems for about 5 years and NEVER had an issue before. If I can get the pc back up and running i'll just use one of my old modems.

Right then, think i've got it sorted now.

deleted the "ryan" account, saved the files i wanted and the remastered the whole system.

got the same error while installing the modem though, but the pc and internet work. which is good.

    cheers for your help chaps.
