Ive just been for a gentle ride on my bike, and noticed a clunk coming from the bottom bracket when the left pedal reaches the top of the stroke, it makes no difference if im pushing hard or just cruising ( eg standing or sitting) it just clunks and I can feel it through the pedals. Ive put 3 in 1 oil on it to see if this resolves it, but any other suggestions??
thanks!

i think so, i havent got time to check now, but thats my next option, go through every bolt checking, just wondering if there was something specific I should check.

How olds the BB? What type is it?Is everything secure? Some Bikeshops answer would be......Chainset off, BB out ,check it,throw in bin, insert another, chainset back on. My mate had a similar scenario and it was a hairline crack in the bottom bracket shell which only showed up when there was weight on it. Have a good look round the welds and then take out the BB.

Guess the frame in my picture!!!

  • i have a simlar problem on my 6 week old bighit3, basically i get a creak, much like a not tight enough square taper bb when i pedal, on stood up though,
or if i lead with my right foot, then lead with my left then push down, or vice versa. i have hussfelt howitzer cranks and a blackspire device. and the nuts are tight too, the only thin i can thin ok, that could have affected it is thet i did a 4ft drop to flat and the pedal hit the ground pretty hard (foot slipped).
    any ideas?

If you bought it local it would do no harm to take it back to the shop and explain the problem. If not then its a bike shop for you I think. Ive built up most of my own bikes so I never scrimp on a BB but Off the shelf bikes usually have a nasty surprise in the BB shell. I bought a Trek Fuel a while back and the BB was unbelievably pants. And that was a œ950 bike. Good luck.

ps, creaky cranks are a different ballgame as theres another ton of reasons why the make a noise. Its really a hands on job to solve the problem.
