can anyone please inform me of how the hierarchy of bike bits goes?
from the budget stuff to the top-notch stuff?
from taking advice off you dudes I'm looking at building my own bike from bits and bobs and some monkey grease, but don't want to get ripped off by some over keen cycle shop salesman selling me a duff part that cost too much.

    Shimano goes in:

    Alivio
    Acera
    Deore
    (Deore) LX / Hone
    (Deore) XT
    Saint
    XTR

Saint and Hone are the two more freeridey groupsets. Hone is almost exactly LX level, Saint is close to XTR, but not quite.
XTR is, generally, super-desirable no-expense-spared good, XT the best that most normal people have.

    Shimano:
    It goes:

    XTR - top
    XT
    LX
    Deore - budget

Theres a few lower end stuff than that that you dont want to bother with...

    SRAM:

X0 - uber expensive carbon etc, top end stuff.
    X9
    X7
Dont go any lower than X7 for mountain bikes.

  • cool. i'm pretty normal other than my attraction to shiny things and tasty birds, so i'll aim for XT or SRAM X9 to be safe.

    Would they compare like;
    XTR- XO
    XT- X9
    LX- X7 ?

Just thought that X7 was better than LX stuff...?

Hayes 9s are excellent brakes for the money. No arguments from me really.

Excellent thread can anyone take it to the next level and share the ranking order of Hayes brakes or suntour shocks or any other bits of kit that you can think of? If loads of info appears maybe it will get stickyed!!

Ah yeah, I always get those two the wrong way round. They are incredibly close, though...
There is also M440, which is lower than Acera, too. Though I wouldn't really, it's the lowest group that Shimano count as MtB.

Attack and Rocket are SRAM's shimano-compatible shifters.
Their SRAM-compatible line under X7 are the SX range - SX3 and SX5. They also do the MRX shifters, but they're _really_ bad.

They'd be TY22, the Tourney range, which aren't in Shimano's MtB line - they're below it.

Nexave and Exage are also sometimes found on MtBs, though they're hybrid groupsets.

Great idea for a thread. Could someone add some info for Suspension forks and rear shocks? I'm specing up a Full suss and I'm finding it a nightmare comparing forks v weight v features.

What was not mentioned earlier is whilst Hone and Saints are close to LX and XT respectivly, There both weigh quite abit more but will take a bigger bashing, not really XC stuff if your into that.
There really isn't much diffrence between LX and XT on the new range apart from a tiny bit of weight. Most mechanics are the same.
Personaly i'd go for either XTR group set or LX/Hone. (If you go shimano)
I also just put the (Sram) attack shifters on my bike, Much better then standard Deore in my mind.

Brakes, why not get some Formula Oros! (tad expencive though)

A good place to get group sets from is price shaggers on planet X
