As for bikes, would you let your parents choose presents based around your hobby?

Well, if I want something particular on my birthday or Christmas I usually tell them what it is and where is the best place to buy it from. Sometimes they'll get me the odd coat Weston Super Mareing or snowboarding, they have excellent taste. [:D]

It's more primal than that though.
Getting a car is the first really big purchase/decision most people make when they're young. To be robbed of the choice would hurt.

I was quite lucky in that I got to borrow a car until I could afford to buy one myself.
