Is the shop ripping me off? - FiveD vs Alivio

Hi everyone, good to find a good active forum.
I got myself a new GT Avalanche 1.0 4 weeks ago to replace my stolen bike (sniff, had it 14 years!). 2 weeks later and the bottom bracket is making some horrible noises.
Took it into the shop and they said that there were no bottom brackets for the Truvativ FiveD IN THE UK!! I didn't really believe them, but they had it 2 weeks so I got a bit annoyed and told them to swap it for something else.
They have put an Alivio chainset on, is this as good as the FiveD? The guy in the shop didn't stop moaning about the Powerspline thing that Truvativ use.
Thanks
Jim

There are craploads of powerspline BBs in the UK. Shouldn't be needing a replacement after two weeks either. Sounds like it just needs greasing to be honest. Don't be bullied into changing your chainset until actualy need or want to.

Hellfrauds! no way CyclesUK.... probably just as bad.

Now this is interesting you see. Is anyone in the trade and could actually name a supplier?
I don't mind him changing the chainset, but anything less than Deore is just waz isn't it ?0 -
It doesn't matter about the suppliers. There's no way you could have shredded a BB inside of two weeks.

Sounds more like the interface than the bearings.

just out of curiosity, which cycles uk was it?
Had a few probs with one of their shops too!0 -
Powerspline is notoriously poo, but 2 weeks is ridiculous.
And yes there are plenty of Powerspline BBs, any shop can order them from Fishers.

Thats good to know, so the alivio will be better?
Fishers was the suppliers they mentioned, they had no BB.0 -
I would say better.
Do you what interface you got? Square taper or Octalink?
However as Alex said, it seems like you were bullied in changing your chainset merely on the mechanic's opinion towards powerspline/will to squeeze every penny out of you.

I haven't, and wont pay any more money. Not sure about the interface, it's just a bog standard Avalanche 1.0 disc.0
-
That's not too shabby then.
I would class it as an upgrade.
Re: The interface, with the new cranks, you will have been given a new bottom bracket too. I imagine it'll be square taper as it's cheaper.

I wouldn't really call moving from powerspline to square taper an upgrade.

Maybe not, but he'll get better service life out of the bottom bracket and the Alivio cranks and rings surpass the Truvativs.

Would have been nice to upgrade to deore in my opinion. As long as its a free service thingy/replacment/warrenty then thats alright. Sound like your BB/cranks wasn't properly installed.

I've got a knackered powerspline BB due to be replaced under warranty as well. Lasted less than 3 months.
If I was paying for it myself I'd dump the BB and cranks and go for LX.0
