Anyone use McAffee Virus Prog?

It is truelly evil...

So it started playing up, bringing up an error message about a missing file it needed, and how a re-install was a good idea.

Me pap's just picked up Norton, and I've not been happy with McGaffe from the start, so I thought I'd uninstall that and go for Norton instead.

Add/Remove Programs
Remove McGaffe etc etc.

Now generally what happens next is you restart and the concerned program is gone. But noooo....

I log back on to get about 20 messages telling me: 'McGaffe is incomplete, McGaffe is missing these files, Mcgaffe should be re-installed.

So basically, when you uninstall it, it then tells you it isn't installed and should be. thanks.

So I go back to add/remove programs. Find there is still a bit of McGaffe in existance on there, so click to remove that, and it tells me 'blahblahblah file is missing, cannot uninstall'.

So It seems i'm stuck with the bloody thing, which would be all welll and vaguelly OK, except I can't find the fooking McGaffe box so I can't re-install it eitehr. FutherMucker!!

ok, so norton sucks, but I'm still stuck with the remnants of McGaffe. Which I can't seem to remove

Is there anything McAffee related left in the Add/Remove programs list? Or in the process list of the Ctrl-Alt-Del dialog? Or in the start menu? It's probably got some components of a different name, so check out anything you're not sure on.

Do you have the original CD or installer file?

i should have the original cd, but im tearing the room apart looking at the moment.

add/remove list still has McGaffe uninstaller, but it wont let me uninstall it
C A D still has MPFtray.exe, MPFagent.exe, wdfmgr.exe, MSKSrvr.exe and other generic bits of tat floating around that i think are McGaffe related

Just delete everything McAffee you can see lying around where ever you installed it, then either go through the registry and delete all the McAffee entries. Or download a registy cleaner, and let it do it for you. Such as CCleaner.

What I'd do, with no real certainty of it working is, kill all processes related to McAfee, remove all mentions of anything McAfee related from msconfig (start -> run -> 'msconfig') and reboot, probably into safe mode. Then try uninstalling with what's in add/remove.

Ideally, I'd first reinstall off the original CD, then uninstall using whatever installer it creates (having killed, removed and rebooted).

That requires effort though, my way doesn't. [:)] And Add/Remove often doesn't work in the case of Norton, so I'd imagine McAffee is the same.

And Mike, do yourself a favour and download a good, free AV program, like Avast! (my personal favourite) or AVG.

You have to stop all processes running, eg Alt + Ctrl + Delete.
Then restart, go into the C:\ Drive > Windows > Programs > Find Mcaffee. Change the file from a read only file and move it to your desktop.
Rename this file. (bearing in mind to get this a out of Read only mode, you have to keep the Dialog box open with the Read Only box UN-TICKED, just click apply.)

Once rebooted, delete the file/folders.
After, if some do not delete, because in use etc.
Do the read only thing, move from the folder onto your desktop/different folder, restart and delete.
Once you've got everything off, it shuts up.

Woop, cheers guys. Very nearly there, got 3 residual .dll files left, that dont appear to actually be doing anything, so it is by and large beaten. Sweet (I'll keep working on those 3 as mentioned by carey8 above).

Installing AVG now, I'll pick up all 3 versions, (spyware, virus and anti-root kit [whatever that is])

Anything else I should get running to keep it all ticking over smoothly, but safely. Preferably plug and play, so I don't have to keep updating stuff

CCleaner,
If you've AVG Spyware thing, dont really need any others, although, personally, i prefer Adaware.

Goes with out saying seeing if there are updates to drivers every now and again. [:)]

Also, defrag at least once every two weeks, and Do a 'Disk Clean up' at least once a week.

Got to admit i'm pretty slack on disk-clean ups and defrags, but I'll try to keep on it

Neither are Vital, but De-fragging once a month at least will keep your computer a fair amount faster.
If you're going to use Ccleaner then the Need for a disk cleaner isn't really needed that regulary. Do it at the same time as you frag, only to compress deleted files etc.

Plus some AV programs are notoriously difficult to remove, so it might not even work.

You can set the computer to do that automatically. Every however long (week month etc)
