Shimano cassettes/freewheels
Exactly what is the differance between the two and can i swap a shimano MF TZ-07 (14-28)Freewheel for a HG 50 (11-34)cassette not the megarange one though. rear derallier is a tourney so can't go bigger just need to improve speed on a tandem i am doing up.

A cassette slides onto a freehub body, a freewheel (or block) has the mechanism integrated and screws onto the hub. The freewheel is an older system, and has been replaced on MTBS by the more durable cassette and freehub system. So the answer is no. Not only will it not attatch, its wider (if only 7 speed), and you'd need a new gear shifter too. And chain. And probably rear mech! To get a cassette to fit you'd need a new wheel plus the above changes.
What bike and gears?

tandem i have just finished? i put tourney shifters and derailler on as it would fit and i had them spare. hence only 7 speed just the 14-28 is a bit slow and i'm a speed freak.0

Unfortunately you would need a new wheel to get smaller than 14t. You can get older 7 spd cassettes so will work with your set up (use a spacer) but even then the wheel may be too wide for your dropouts ie 135 mm on 130mm dropouts. Good article on park (as above) and Sheldon on this.

suppose i'll have to fit a HG50 7 Speed Freewheel mega range bit overkill but i really would like a 11-34t freewheel.0

I wasnt aware you could get 11t blocks, could be wrong!

Should screw straight on then, but certainly need a longer chain for that big cog, and not sure your rear mech can cope with a 34T large cog.

i'm not all that bothered about the big cog just the small one. and have plenty of chain do you think the derailler will be able to cope though?0

Rear mechs have certain specifications, such as capacity and max rear cog size. The Tourney isnt the best mech, and I am unsure about its ability with a 34t cog. Some such as the tourney 40 can be used with the larger cogs. You need to find your model and look up its spec. Should be no probs with the 11t, but you will prob need a longer chain to be on the safe side. Hit the wrong gear combo and your chain is too short... not good!

yeah i know, but i don't know the specs. Some git who sold it to me took all the labels off. i'll risk it, should be able to cope, oh and have plenty of new chain so ain't concerned i'll add some more links if need be.0
