Here's mud in your eye!

I was out riding in the rain this afternoon and had to brake very rapidly on an amazing downhill track because a hefty chunk of mud had flicked up straight into my eye, not around my eye, but bang on the eyeball! Most obviously must have come straight back out again, but there was a few minutes of painful scratching going on!
So this may seem like a really basic question, but what is the best mud-guard for the front wheel? I'm thinking simple tie-wrapped crud catcher, but on doing some searching i've seen some two-part mudguards that fit front and back of the forks. Are they any good, better than a crud catcher or is the crud catcher still the best?
Opinions please!

piece of inner tube between the fork arch and crown, cheapest and best. however the moral of the story is wear goggles or riding glasses.

guards do not stop all the mud but most of it so if i was you i would get some interchangable lense glases0

Can you explain the inner tube thing? It seems like that would protect the frame from stones but not a lot else.
I'd quote the line from the post but I don't know how!Specialized Rockhopper '07

well... as your blasting down the track in wet weather, the tyres get clogged with mud which when coming to the peak of the rotationat the top as the wheel rotates is flys off, you then ride into the mud as it is thrown upward/slightly forward. the innertube stop the mud flicking up infront of you.

So a piece of innertube to hang down from under the forks to just above the tyre?
Sounds like it would work, can't think how to attach it though to try it!
I'll figure something out, cheers.Specialized Rockhopper '07

cut it to the right size, and hole puncha hole in each corner, cable tie one end to the fork crown and one end to the fork arch. If you go to a winter/wet DH race many of the racers will be seen with them.

i always get this problem too, but i cant use glasses, they must up all the time and when they arent misted up, I find you cant see the trail as well as with the naked eye, i end up stopping half way, stuffing the glasses in my pocket and just riding and put up with the mud. Im thinking of getting a mud guard, but seems summers coming, (hopefully) they wont be needed so much!
