should i get a derailleur guard (loop of metal that goes over rear derailleur) for my bike to protect the derailleur when i crash? i know its the sort of thing you get on kids' bikes but it could save me a bit of money as i do loads of jumps and do crash a bit
thanks

It has been noted in the LBS that these guards can and do bend frames, just a word of warning.
Rear mechs ain't that expensive so i wouldn't bother.0 -
really? interesting... but i suppose if u got it caught on something then as it is bolted onto the frame it could bend the frame

What about a "hanger banger"?
They fit onto the wheel axle and screw into the derailleur.
On-One make one as do M:Parts (Madison)

But depending if you have horizontal dropouts or not. If you don't you need a chain tensioner, which works in nearly the same way as a rear mech.

on my giant ive got a single chain tensioner at the front on the bottom which is really good but sometimes the chain just bounces off the top which is really annoying.
the hanger banger thing looks good - except the price - some little bolt thing for œ30!!it must be really good otherwise they are a rip off

Just get a deore mech if the current one breaks, but learn how to set it up well. Thats your best bet, IMO.
