Although I know its almost completely impossible to get in, I'm thinking of applying to the Trinity College to do engineering. I think I should be on for AAAB/C (as i'm crap at music) in Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Music by next june.
Any tips on how to get in? And is it actually worth it?

Have you been to an open day and seen it? I was well up for going, then went to look around and thought it was crap compared to alot of universities. (I'm talking about the engineering department).
What engineering are you going to study?0 -
I live in Cambridge.
It's full of foreign students and tourists.
The unis push you very very very hard, so if you don't like being worked then don't bother.

Open days next tuesday, I suppose I might as well go, gets me a day off school.
Probably looking at Mechanical/Structural.

Much more than "suppose I might as well go".
Or it should be much more than that anyway. If you have the opportunity to go, go FFS!
You're looking at spending the next 4 or 5 years of your life there, and you better be pleased that you're attending. Else you won't do well. You need to "suss it out".0 -
I've known a few people go through Oxbridge (only the, er, 'traditional' subjects, though: PPP, classics, English etc.).
Apparently it's really not as bad cilique-wise as popularly believed, but it /is/ hard work.
I'm not sure Oxbridge is actually that revered above the more engineeringy unis (Imperial, Warwick etc.)

Well could do Maths but I don't really fancy years of pure theoretical maths. Imperial is still at the top of my list atm. But I will go to the open day next week, I'm still undecided.
I haven't checked out Warwick actually.

I've got quite a few friends who went to cambridge, I think its all about what you want from the university experience. Oxbridge is really at the wrong end of the work/play ratio, some people can have it easy there, 99% of people cant or dont choose to.
Warwicks a miserable place from what I remember, not sure I'd want to goto Imperial either.

P.s Im not doing that again.0 -
Loughborough looks a bit sexy.
Imperial is okay but I don't really want to live in London, mostly because it apparently costs a lot more for accommodation etc.

My friend had an interview for Medicine there. She has AAAA at AS level (on for the same at A2), 10A* at GCSE, Headgirl and is off to Peru this Summer to help homeless kids build shelters. Lots of work experience at a surgery and a care home. Did she get in? No. She's now going to imperial.
A guy from our school did get in. He works non stop and is a constant achiever. He is doing an electrical engineering course. Unless you are the same kind of standards as these two, you don't stand a chance.
Imperial is a fantastic uni. Top notch facilities all round. Excellent settings with the museums right next door. Come to Edinburgh though, it rocks!

Ah, my GCSE's are pretty crap, nowhere near 10A*'s.

My mate went to Cambridge and it sounds like he had a mint time.
Loads of top women and loads of fun, apparantly they do something called the bed race through town and there is this induction thing the girls in the Pink Ladys club do which involves running through the town in their underwear.
He never mentioned that it was a hard slog but im sure the others on this forum arent making it up.
Im sure that the interview has something to do with getting in, I also know somone who got mint grades and didnt make it but some courses there must be so over subscribed its untrue.

uni might be great doesn't stop Cambridge being one of the worst places ever for a night out full of bloody uni students. although i guess as you'll be one that wont really bother you0

My older brother did Cambridge (trinity or hommerton IIRC) He absolutely loved it, work hard, play hard etc... Some stupid ratio of 7 women to 1 man for students. Went up there for his graduation and had a fantastic time. Cambridge is a fairly small/quite place itself though.

With oxbridge it all about passion. You've got to love what you are doing or you wont last the distance. Sure you work hard, a lot harder than at other universitys but you can get a lot out of it. The main problem with oxbridge is the lack of nice riding!
As for people saying you need xyz to get in and telling horror stories about people not getting in with impresssive qualifications, ignore them. The tutors are very good at telling the sort of poeple who are going to cope with the pressure and they will not let you in if they don't think you will be able to handle the pace. Don't forget you have 6 options (or at least i did!) so it is always worth at least trying one of the two, just to say you tried.
I'm at oxford but have spent quite a bit of time in cambridge, and tbh it doesn't feel as nice. They do however have the biggest witherspoons in the country, if you care.
However, wherever you end up you'll have a great time so don't stress too much and do what you love.

Always remember to pick your Uni according to the local trails or you'll be stuck with nowhere to ride for three years!0 -
I'm probably going to try for Oxbridge...well started already really. Ride whenever, what sort of attitude do you have in terms of studying etc.? Only wondering because I am fairly laid back about my work and studying but get pretty decent grades most of the time and work is always in when required. I'm guessing I'd have to change that?

Oxbridge may have an amazing reputation for hard work and the quality of its degrees, but a good degree from any top 10-15 will get you job interviews very easily, so I wouldn't get too hung up on it. Go for it, but keep it in perspective and don't cry if you don't get in. I know people who cried. I also know two people who dropped out because it didn't suit them and have done very well at Bath and Bristol, getting jobs effortlessly after graduation.
While I'm sure you'll get a top notch education from either place, there are two things to remember that hopefully won't annoy anyone too badly:
1) As far as I'm aware, a part of the reason for the high workload is the shorter terms. The material isn't necessarily that much harder. I used Oxbridge based websites as a study aid many, many times during my degree and never found the level significantly different from our own. (Bath, Chemistry)
2) Oxbridge students forget things, just like the rest of us do. As they found out when they came on summer placements at AstraZeneca when I worked there, they won't automatically know more than you or have better ideas than you.
So yeah, go for it, but don't kill yourself for it...0 -
To be honest Cambridge isn't at the top of my list as it stands, and so there is probably not a lot of point in me trying to get in. I'm much more interested in Loughborough and Bristol as it stands.

If I was trying to get in, the biggest barrier would be money. Isn't it hugely expensive?

More Hazadorous chemicals than fires and explosions, at least on my course anyway. I don't really like the practicals tbh, I always seem to get some kind of acid/alkali/toxic chemical on my hand or clothes.
