Hi guys,
Can you shead any light on this problem i am having,i got fed up with the Sram x9 stuff on my bike,so i have invested in the following parts,
XTR rapidfire shifter set(M970)
XTR 11-32T Casset(CS-M970)
XTR Crankset(M970)
XTR Front mech(M970)
XTR Rear mech (M971)
and a xtr chain
The problem i am having is working out what rear mech i need,i called jungle and was advised a medium cage mech would work fine
also got wiggle to call me and the guy said That i should use the M971 not the M970 rear mech,
So i have the M971 rear(medium) but have not fitted it yet as i am waiting for the shifters.
Will this be ok or is there any problems you can see with the componets???
Many,many thanks in advance
Luke

ok your range is 41 teeth so really you should have the RD-M971-SGS rear mech with has a range of 43 teeth while the RD-M971-GS has a range of 33 teeth which could cause the odd problem.

Thanks for the speedy reply nick! So as the rear mech is still unused should i return it and change to the Long cage one?
What problems will the med cause?
Does the travel of my frame also effect this ?

i am just taking the gears into comsideration.basically the chain will be slack some gears. now these gears may actually not be used.
i would be asking stiff how they came to the desicion that the sorter gaged mech would be correct over the long cage? they may have some very valid reasons.
have a read of This first.

From a personal point of view nick, would you say it therefore acceptable to run a medium cage mech on a 32-11 cassette with a 22,32,44 chainring so long as you don't cross the gears?

Andrew so much depends on the bike and the rider have a look at the link above.
one thing to remember is this. the chain length stays the same whatever mech you run. so you end up with a chain that can not be absorbed by the mech.
read the info in the link above and then the info in setting chain length.
so andrew as long as the gears are set on the big to big plus 2 links there should be no tight shifts just a few with no tension in the chain.
