A letter from Renault UK.

This is the letter that watchdog said all clio owners would get, asking them (and me) to come in to get their bonnet catches checked.

Half minds whether to get it done or not. It means booking it in and all that malarky, and knowing renault they'll try to flog me a new car whilst im there.

About bloody time! There's been hundreds of cases where peoples bonnets have flung open unexpectedly whilst driving those Clios, causing several crashes and many severe injuries. For about the last two years Renault have strongly denied that it has been a fault of theirs despite the huge statistics.

    Do it mate.

Take it in. A friend of mine works in the production and has been trying to get Renault to own up to this fault since the whole problem began. The hatch which holds the bonnet actually isn't faulty, but the hatch itself, under even minor pressure (from the air which is propelled onto it by the speed of the car) causes it to 'slip' and so the catch loses it's grip on it. By just replacing the catch with a larger one, the whole problem is sorted and i heard something about compensation for those who had been affected by this.

They still haven't admitted to anything. The letter basically informs of a change to the clio owners manual to state the bonnet must be routinely checked as part of general maintainence.

They also advise that the car is taken to a dealership so they can show you how to perform the maintainence on it.

Its well worded to avoid liablity.

I won't be bothering to take mine back.

Not to mention the chances of killing yourself and anyone around you.

if you don't, you shouldnt be allowed to drive. if it goes when you are traveling at speed, it'll smash your windscreen, and by the time you've managed to compose yourself enough to brake, chances are your going to crash.
